Delta Dental of California and affiliates disclosed that approximately 7 million of its patients may have had their personal data compromised as a result of the cyber attack on the MOVEit file transfer system earlier this year.

Delta Dental of California says it learned about the attack on Progress Software’s MOVEit file transfer system on June 1, at which time the company said it launched a “thorough” investigation and took steps to “remediate the incident,” according to a data breach notification

“We stopped access to the MOVEit software, removed the malicious files, conducted a thorough analysis of the MOVEit database, applied the recommended patches and reset administrative passwords to the MOVEit system,” the Delta Dental of California data breach notification states.

Delta Dental of California says its investigation determined information belonging to the company had been accessed and acquired without authorization between May 27 and May 30, 2023.

A follow-up investigation completed in November placed the exact number of impacted at nearly 7 million and revealed the data breach exposed names, financial account numbers, credit and debit card numbers, and security codes, Bleeping Computer reports

Delta Dental of California urges affected patients to keep eye out for suspicious activity

Delta Dental of California encourages patients who were affected by the data breach to “remain vigilant” by keeping an eye out for suspicious account activity and closely reviewing bank accounts and credit reports, among other financial statements.

The company says it will reach out to impacted individuals to inform them about the data breach and provide details on specific services available to support them.

“[Delta Dental of California and affiliates] are deeply committed to protecting the information entrusted to us and take issues like this very seriously,” a statement from Delta Dental of California provided to Top Class Actions states. Immediately after being alerted of the incident, we took steps to contain and remediate the incident and protect our data. We also launched a thorough investigation, led by a team of independent third-party forensics, analytics and data mining experts, to determine what information was impacted and with whom it is associated.”

Delta Dental of California is offering 24 months of credit monitoring and identity theft protection services at no cost to patients impacted by the data breach, the statement says.

A class action settlement involving a dental support services provider, Smile Brands, was granted preliminary approval in August and resolved claims the company failed to prevent a 2021 data breach.
