Neiman Marcus Online Data Breach Overview:
- Why: Customers’ payment details and account logins were accessed in the breach.
- Who: Neiman Marcus recently notified 4.6 million customers about a data breach in May 2020.
- Where: Neiman Marcus is based in Dallas, but the data breach affects consumers nationwide.
Retailer Neiman Marcus announced its discovery of a May 2020 breach into its customers’ online accounts system exposing the personal and payment information of 4.6 million shoppers.
The data breach involved customers’ names, contact information, payment card numbers and expiration dates, Neiman Marcus virtual gift card numbers, as well as usernames, passwords, and security questions and answers associated with Neiman Marcus online accounts, according to the company announcement. The CVV numbers of exposed payment cards were not accessed, nor were the PINs of Neiman Marcus virtual gift cards. Of the affected payment and virtual gift cards, more than 85 percent are expired or invalid.
No active Neiman Marcus-branded credit cards were impacted. Further, the company says it does not believe that its affiliated Bergdorf Goodman or Horchow online customer accounts were affected.
Customers With Neiman Marcus Online Accounts Warned To Take Action
Neiman Marcus is requiring customers to reset their online account passwords if they have not done so since May 2020. The company has also set up a breach-specific webpage and a call center for those concerned which can be reached at (866) 571-9725, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. CST, and Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. CST. Callers will need to provide the engagement number B019206.
Neiman Marcus has notified law enforcement of the breach, and is working with Mandiant, a cybersecurity company, to investigate.
The retailer paid $1.6 million to end a class action lawsuit filed by customers in the wake of a 2013 Neiman Marcus data breach.
