Robocall task force overview:

  • Who: Attorneys general from every U.S. state formed a robocall task force.
  • Why: The robocall task force will investigate and prosecute telecom companies that allow foreign robocalls into the United States.
  • Where: Americans in every state have reportedly received illegal foreign robocalls.

A new Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force has been formed by attorneys general from every state as part of an effort to protect U.S. residents from illegal foreign robocalls.

This new task force will investigate and prosecute telecommunications companies that allow foreign robocalls in the United States, Law360 reports.

The attorneys general are concerned that telecommunications companies that carry overseas calls into the United States are not taking adequate measures to stop illegal robocalls.

North Carolina’s attorney general, John Stein, issued a press release stating the new robocall task force will “take action against phone companies that violate state and federal laws.”

“I’m proud to create this nationwide task force to hold companies accountable when they turn a blind eye to the robocallers they’re letting on to their networks so they can make more money,” Stein continued.

Task force seeks comprehensive records from telecom companies

The Anti-Robocall Litigation Task Force has reportedly issued subpoenas seeking comprehensive records from 20 companies, according to NBC Connecticut.

According to the National Consumer Law Center and Electronic Information Center, Americans receive nearly 33 million robocalls each day, Stein’s press release said. Many of these scam phone calls reportedly originate overseas.

Americans were reportedly scammed out of nearly $30 billion from robocallers in 2021, Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said in a press release

Tong says he is concerned the scammers prey on vulnerable consumers. He advises consumers not to answer robocalls.

The issue purportedly stems from gateway providers, which is the port of entry for foreign calls before they reach the major telecom carriers. The task force is focusing its investigation on this first point of contact in its effort to fight robocall scams.

FCC enacts stronger regulations in effort to prevent robocall scams

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is also cracking down on unlawful robocalls. It recently enacted new regulations requiring telecom providers to block illegal foreign robocalls when routing calls into the United States.

The FCC also recently ordered phone companies to block auto warranty robocalls initiated by Roy Cox Jr., Aaron Michael Jones and their Sumco Panama companies. They are reportedly responsible for billions of scam auto warranty robocalls to American consumers.

Trust me when I say never- ending. I am tired of receiving these calls and Suspected Spam. I have sick family members and I don’t need my phone line tied up by Robo calls. When asked to removed my number from their database, they say they will, but later on in the same day I recieve calls from the same company. And not to mention generated texts as well.

  2. jennifer bowen says:

please add they call me all the time

  3. Gary Maddock says:

It’s about time, but I’m getting more and more robo texts that need to stop. Also the insurance companies hawking Medicare supplemental insurances need to be reigned in. It is ridiculous when a child of a senior citizen can’t call their parent because the phone is constantly clogged up with robo calls and in not talking 2 or three a day, I’m speaking of 50 to 60+ each day until we started blocking them 6 months ago. She still yet gets 15 to 20 a day and we continue to block. There are no block apps for phones running kaios.
And I personally find it repugnant to expect a person to purchase blocking services. We should be able to opt out period, no carve outs or allowed calls unless we specifically opt in.
Also the deceptive free information adds online that once you ask for and click OK, they say in the fine print that you agree to recurve texts and calls from their marketing affiliates regardless of your number being on a do not call list. It’s hidden in doublespeak legalese but there nonetheless. It needs to be stopped.
