Zoloft Birth Defect Lawsuit Blames Pfizer for Child’s Death

By Andrea Gressman

Zoloft birth defect lawsuitThe makers of Zoloft have recently come under fire from a New York couple that filed a lawsuit claiming that the SSRI antidepressant is directly responsible for birth defects that eventually killed their son. The couple first filed the Zoloft birth defects lawsuit on August 17, 2012 in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania where a Zoloft MDL is currently taking place.

The couple, Jessica and Shawn Coon, alleges in their Zoloft birth defect lawsuit that the SSRI antidepressant contributed to their son’s death. Jessica says she was taking Zoloft while she was pregnant. The couple goes on to claim there was not enough information regarding the potential pregnancy side effects of Zoloft; otherwise she would not have used the SSRI antidepressant while she was pregnant. The couple further states that the use of the medication lead to their son being born with congenital heart defects.

The child, whom is currently known as J.A.C., passed away at a month old because of the Zoloft congenital heart defects he suffered. The couple feels that it was negligent on Pfizer’s part not to adequately warn anyone regarding the potential pregnancy side effects associated with the use of Zoloft. The couple, like many others, claims that Pfizer and subsidiaries such as Greenstone LLC did not practice reasonable thought when producing, marketing and distributing the medication, which has now caused a number of patients to suffer from Zoloft pregnancy side effects.

There are currently a number of SSRI antidepressant lawsuit plaintiffs who have children suffering birth defects because of women using Zoloft at some point during their pregnancies. Furthermore, many studies revealed that Zoloft is in fact linked to an increased risk of children developing birth defects while in the womb. These birth defects include congenital heart disorder, such as what young J.A.C. suffered from, as well as PPHN. Unfortunately, congenital heart disorder is a potentially fatal disorder.

With so many plaintiffs filing Zoloft lawsuits against Pfizer due to its association with birth defects, it certainly raises serious concern in the medical community as well as the general public. If you or someone you know is thinking of becoming pregnant, discuss the use of Zoloft with your doctor as well as its potential side effects. Your doctor may determine it to be wise to stop using Zoloft until after the pregnancy to avoid the risk of birth defects of your unborn child.

Even more interesting is that the New England Journal of Medicine has released many studies that reveal the increased risk of babies born with birth defects because of mothers using SSRI antidepressant medications during pregnancy. The side effect risk of birth defects increases by about 50 percent compared to mothers who do not use SSRI antidepressant medications such as Zoloft.

If your or someone you know had a child with a birth defect due to the consumption of Zoloft during the pregnancy it is important to contact a qualified Zoloft birth defect attorney today to learn more about your legal options.
