Zithromax/Z-Pak Misuse Exposing Countless Users to Unnecessary Side Effects

By Andrea Gressman

Zithromax z-pak side effectsSince Zithromax hit the market, it has been continually misused and overprescribed. Zithromax, also known as Z-Pak, is an antibiotic and it is the successor of erythromycin. Because of its popularity right out of the gate, medical professionals have evidently overlooked what Zithromax was originally approved for and, instead, responded to patient demand for the drug.

The original condition that Zithromax was intended to treat was bronchitis. Once the medical community heard this, they were off and running and the specific details of the prescription seemed to be ignored. While Zithromax was approved to treat bronchitis, it is only for bacterial bronchitis caused by specific bacteria. The issue is that this type of acute bacterial bronchitis actually does not occur in people with good health. It is actually a complication of the chronic bronchitis condition known as COPD. This is referred to as AECB, or acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis in the literature regarding the acute bacterial bronchitis.

In a recent article regarding this topic from Green Valley News, the author was quoted in saying, “There was absolutely no reason to give the drug to the 35-year-old smoker with a week of a bad cough. But this happened millions of times over.” All across the United States people go to their doctor or make a trip to the ER for a common cough they have had for a couple of days and leave with a Zithromax/Z-Pak prescription. After a few days they start to feel better and think that it is because of the Zithromax/Z-Pak that they took. This cycle continues each and every time the patient experiences these same side effects. So, it is no wonder that the Zithromax/Z-Pak lawsuit rate is rising continually as so many people are unnecessarily being exposed to side effects that they do not need to be exposed to in the first place.

The manufacture of Zithromax and Z-Pak, Pfizer, has done very little to bring awareness of the misuse of their drug to the consumers or the medical community. After all, their sales for Zithromax have landed in the millions. Sadly, the patient is the one who is truly suffering as a result of Zithromax being marketed incorrectly as the number of potentially deadly Zithromax side effects continues to rise.
