Zithromax Linked to Increase Risk of Cardiovascular Death
By Anne Bucher
Azithromycin, sold under the brand name Zithromax, is one of the most popular antibiotics in the world. In 2011, U.S. sales of the drug totaled over $450 million. Zithromax is used to treat bronchitis, pneumonia, sexually transmitted diseases and sinus infections.
Zithromax Side Effects
The popularity of the Zithromax, or “Z-Pak” as it’s popularly known, has soared because the drug allows for a shorter course of treatment than other brands of antibiotics. However, this convenience comes with a price. Zithromax has been linked to a number of severe, sometimes fatal, side effects. Some of the most severe Zithromax side effects include:
- Heart attacks
- Stevens Johnson Syndrome
- Liver failure
- Eye infections
- Blindness
- Cardiovascular problems
Because many drugs can interact with Zithromax, it is important to talk to your doctor about which medications you are currently taking.
Increased Risk of Cardiovascular Death
Zithromax’s shorter course of treatment may be convenient, but the health effects associated with the antibiotic may have long-lasting implications. In one Vanderbilt University study, researchers found that the risk of Zithromax heart-related deaths was more than twice the risk of patients who took amoxicillin or no drug at all. The highest risk was noted in patients with existing heart problems. This study was published in the May 2012 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that Zithromax may cause a potentially fatal heart rhythm. While this risk is especially dangerous for patients with existing heart conditions, it can cause health problems for people who are otherwise healthy. Pfizer, the manufacturer of Zithromax, updated the drug’s label to include a warning about the heart dangers associated with the drug.
Number of Zithromax Lawsuits Likely to Increase
Pfizer has already agreed to a $6 million Zithromax settlement after Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard accused the drug manufacturer of deceptive advertisements that overstated the benefits of Zithromax. The advertisements in question involved a direct-to-consumer advertising campaign that encouraged parents to urge doctors to prescribe Zithromax to treat their children’s ear infections.
Now that the FDA has issued warnings about the potentially fatal Zithromax heart risks, more lawsuits are certain to follow. Thousands of people have suffered from significant Zithromax side effects. As awareness grows about the potential for fatal Zithromax side effects, people are filing lawsuits against Pfizer for failing to adequately evaluate the safety of their product before putting it on the market.
