Young Man’s Troubling Battle with Propecia Side Effects
By Jessica Tyner
The following story was shared in an online help forum for victims of Propecia side effects. If you have a similar story, you may have a legal claim for compensation. See if you qualify now.
Josh calls himself a normal guy who went to college and never had any problems before in the physical, mental or sexual health realm. However, he started losing his hair in his mid-20s and, just like any other man, wanted to hold on to his hair as long as possible. He calls himself smart, but admits taking Propecia was the stupidest thing he’s ever done. He won scholarships to college, never smoked, and practiced a healthy diet and exercise. Even throughout his Propecia nightmare, he stayed active.
He recalls being mentally sharp, intelligent and creative before taking Propecia — he also cites an extremely high sex drive, which is normal for men his age. He took Propecia for about one year and stopped in 2005. He shared his story five years later, and the severe Propecia side effects hadn’t lessened at all. His personality has completely changed, and he’s become withdrawn and moody. But that’s not the end of his Propecia struggle.
Propecia’s Lingering Effect
One little-known side effect of Propecia is that it can cause shrinking genitals, and Josh reports that both the length and girth of his penis shrank on Propecia and stayed that way. Of course, that doesn’t matter much to Josh anyway since his genitals are numb and “feel like rubber,” and he has no interest in sex even if he could get aroused. His memory has been impaired, his muscles have atrophied even though he’s kept up with a lifting routine and he has deposits of fat that he called feminine.
It’s not just his complete lack of sex drive that bothers him; Josh says he’s completely lost his zest for life in general. He’s not the first Propecia victim who calls himself a shell of his former self, and he’s scared about the future. It’s already been several years since he stopped the drug, and his doctor has confirmed that he has lowered testosterone levels. He has trouble ejaculating on the rare occasions where he can get sexually excited, and his thoughts about a future family are dismal.
A Struggle for a Cure
He reports that he’s seen several doctors about his Propecia problem, but they all dismiss them since hormonally, he’s pretty “normal” even with the lowered testosterone. What’s especially crushing for Josh is that, when he explains his story to women, they’re flippant about the initial vanity and say that hair’s not that important. It’s embarrassing to routinely have to explain to women about his Propecia issues, and he admits to breaking down crying on numerous occasions.
According to Josh, his LF and FSH levels are apparently permanently altered by Propecia, making him equivalent to men in their 80s in terms of sex drive.
His biggest concern is that nobody is taking this seriously, and he’s sure there are other men like him. Josh eagerly signed up for a Propecia study headed by Dr. Michael Irwig at George Washington University, hopeful for a cure or at least some direction. When asked what he thinks about Propecia’s “warning” that two percent of men may experience sexual side effects that stop when Propecia is stopped, he can only shake his head.
