Yaz & Yasmin Pose Significant Blood Clot Risk
By Anne Bucher
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has received reports of more than 50 deaths that are linked to Yaz or Yasmin blood clots. Women who take these pills experience an increased risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE) and blood clots. If these clots enter vital organs such as the brain or heart, they can be life-threatening. The British Medical Journal published a study suggesting that women who use Yaz or Yasmin may experience as much as a 74 percent higher risk of developing a Yasmin blood clot, DVT or PE.
Study by French Health Agency Found Heightened Yasmin Blood Clot Risks
In a recent study conducted by the French National Agency for the Safety of Drugs and Health Products (ANSM), the agency found that oral contraceptives were linked to the deaths of nearly 20 French women each year. Fourteen of the 20 deaths were linked to pills that contained the synthetic progestin drospirenone, a drug sold under the brand names Yaz, Yasmin and Beyaz. These pills are all manufactured and sold by Bayer Pharmaceuticals.
The ANSM also found that, in the last decade, birth control pills were linked to more than 2,500 cases of blood clots each year. The agency also found that the newer brands of birth control pills caused more than two times as many deaths as the older brands. These blood clots can cause significant health complications. In some cases, Yasmin blood clots can be fatal.
Bayer Faced with Hundreds of Thousands of Yaz Lawsuits
In the United States, Bayer is facing at least 10,000 Yaz lawsuits. Due to the high number of women filing Yasmin blood clot lawsuits, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Legislation consolidated these cases into multidistrict litigation (MDL). These Yaz lawsuits will be heard by a federal judge in Illinois. Plaintiffs allege that Bayer overstated the benefits of the drug and downplayed the potential health risks. They claim that, had they known about the potentially deadly Yasmin blood clot risk, they would not have used Yaz or Yasmin. To date, Bayer has set aside more than $1 billion to settle lawsuits filed by plaintiffs who claim they suffered Yaz or Yasmin blood clot or gallbladder injuries.
