Stryker Hip Implants Linked to Metal Poisoning

By Jessica Tyner

metal hip implant poisoningRecently, Stryker hip implants have been added to the litigation surrounding metal-on-metal hip implants, even though it’s a different device entirely. The complications with metal-on-metal hip implants have been well known for a while, and Stryker was supposed to be a safe alternative. Thousands of people opted for the alternative, unaware of the side effects of Stryker hip implants.

Stryker technically isn’t a metal-on-metal hip implant, but it has some metal-on-metal components. It’s those components that can cause metallosis, which is basically poisoning of the blood from metal flaking into the bloodstream. According to experts, Stryker hip implants can also cause tissue death and a host of “smaller” complications that may require revision surgery.

Bringing Stryker to the Forefront

Awareness is the key to preventing recipients of Stryker hip implants from ignoring the warning signs of serious side effects from these devices, including metallosis (metal poisoning).

Most people inherently trust their doctors and don’t question how safe Stryker hip implants are. Unfortunately, metallosis is also mis-diagnosed on a regular basis and requires specific tests to diagnose it. Some people have severe symptoms metal poisoning, while others have none at all until it’s too late. The amount of metal that gets introduced into the blood, and how quickly it flakes away, can also play a role in symptoms. Even people who have symptoms of metal poisoning may shy away from checkups because of the cost or because they’re sure it’s nothing too serious.

Even when a faulty Stryker hip implant is spotted, the revision surgery to replace it can be painful, expensive and dangerous. Stryker victims with insurance still face costly medical bills and ongoing care and maintenance. Banding together with other Stryker metal poisoning victims through multidistrict litigation (MDL) can make compensation easier to obtain. So far hundreds of lawsuits over failed metal hip implants have been consolidated into a Stryker lawsuit MDL.

The Stryker Recall

Stryker hip implants were recalled in the U.S. in June 2012, but the question everyone’s asking is what took them so long? It had already been recalled in the UK, and the evidence of problems with the hip implants was the same on either side of the pond.

Prior to the recall, over 20,000 people received a Stryker implant and there are likely many victims who aren’t aware of the complications or who haven’t come forward yet.

The thousands of people who thought they were choosing a safe implant may be facing metal poisoning, or a device that’s corroding and will soon leave have toxic chemicals leaking into their bloodstream and soft tissue. If Stryker poisoning isn’t caught in time, it can lead to serious complications and even death.
