Essure is a popular permanent birth control method, but more and more women are coming forward with reports of a wide array of serious Essure adverse events.
Many women have already filed lawsuits against the device’s manufacturer, Bayer Healthcare, claiming that the company failed to adequately warn the patients and the medical community about the risk of Essure adverse events.
Background of Essure
The Essure device was designed as a more simple permanent birth control option than surgical tubal ligation. It consists of two metal coils lined with a thin fabric, which are implanted in the fallopian tubes during a quick outpatient procedure.
The Essure procedure can be done in a doctor’s office, which is one of its major benefits—it doesn’t require invasive surgery, and patients don’t even need anesthesia. It’s not until a few months after the procedure that the device becomes effective.
After implantation, the coils expand into the surrounding tissue, and the tissue grows in around them in turn. This is intended to completely block the fallopian tubes and effectively prevent pregnancy.
Essure has been around for over a decade, and has quickly become a popular option since its approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) back in 2002. Around 750,000 women have chosen Essure as their permanent birth control option.
Bayer Healthcare markets Essure as a safe and effective form of birth control. However, an ever-growing pile of lawsuits allege that patients have suffered from slew of Essure adverse events.
Essure Adverse Events
Any medication or medical device will come with certain side effects, but Essure patients claim that their Essure adverse events are far more serious than they ever expected or were warned about. So far, over 5,000 reports of serious Essure adverse events have been filed with the FDA since the device’s approval.
Minor Essure adverse events include headaches, dizziness, vomiting, cramps, abdominal or back pain, fatigue, weight fluctuation, and pain during sex.
Unfortunately, women have also reported experiencing some major Essure adverse events that can lead to serious and lasting damage. These more serious Essure adverse events include implant failure, device migration, organ perforation, device fracture, and ectopic pregnancy. Any of these problems can have permanent effects.
For some, these major Essure adverse events may require removal surgery to fix. Of course, removal surgery itself brings with it further risks of its own.
Filing a Lawsuit Over Essure Adverse Events
According to Essure lawsuits, Bayer failed to adequately warn patients and the medical community about the risk of these Essure adverse events, and instead chose to actively withhold this valuable information. Plaintiffs claim that had they been given adequate warning about the risk of these complications, they would have chosen a safer alternative than the Essure birth control device and avoided these risks altogether.
If you or someone you love has suffered from Essure adverse events like these, you may be able to file a lawsuit. While filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by Essure adverse events, it can help to compensate for the financial cost of medical expenses and lost wages.
In general, Essure lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
