Propecia Patients Grew Hair But Lost Sex Drive

By Anne Bucher

Propecia sexual problemsPropecia (finasteride), marketed by Merck & Co., is a pill used to treat male pattern hair loss. While it has helped numerous men regrow their thinning hair, many have stepped forward to complain about Propecia side effects that last even after they stop treatment.

Last year, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) updated the warning for Propecia to note that Propecia sexual side effects could continue after the patient discontinues use of the drug. A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine found that Propecia sexual side effects could potentially persist for years after the patient stops treatment. In this study, researchers evaluated 54 men under the age of 40 who reported that they experienced side effects for more than three months after they stopped taking Propecia. They had no medical, sexual or psychological complaints prior to taking the drug. These men reported a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Difficulty reaching orgasm
  • Shrinking genitals
  • Decreased libido
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Brain fog

For 96 percent of these study participants, the Propecia sexual problems lasted more than one year after they stopped taking the medication. The researchers are concerned that the Propecia side effects may be permanent. While the sample size was small and focused on men who already experienced persistent side effects, it raises concern about the safety of finasteride.

In clinical trials, only 2 percent of men experienced Propecia sexual side effects. It is unknown how many of these men experienced side effects that lasted after they ceased treatment. However, because the drug is commonly prescribed, thousands of men may affected by the drug. Many men have filed lawsuits against Merck, claiming that the company failed to provide adequate warning about the possibility of long-term Propecia sexual side effects. As a result, these men have experienced hardship in their relationships and their professional lives. They also fear that they may have to live with the Propecia sexual dysfunction for the rest of their lives.

If you or someone you love has suffered from Propecia sexual dysfunction, you are not alone. More and more men have come forward to complain about sexual side effects that lasted even after they discontinued treatment. They have accused Merck of failing to warn about the potential of persistent sexual side effects of Propecia. They claim that, had they known about the potential for long-term risks, they never would have chosen to take Propecia.

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (MDL) has agreed to consolidate the federal Propecia lawsuits. The MDL will be handled by a federal judge in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
