Propecia Lawsuit MDL Adds Another Sexual Side Effect Victim

By Andrea Gressman

Propecia sexual side effects lawsuitAnother Propecia side effect victim has filed a product liability lawsuit naming Merck & Co., the manufacturer of Propecia, as the defendant. The case was filed on January 22, 2013 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, and was later moved to the Propecia lawsuit multidistrict litigation (MDL). The plaintiff claims the hair loss drug is responsible for the severe side effects he experienced after he started taking Propecia to treat his male pattern baldness.

The plaintiff in this Propecia lawsuit states that he was only 25 when he started taking Propecia in order to stop his hair loss. He began taking the drug in 2003. He then claims that from the years 2006 until 2012 he regularly used Propecia and started suffering from the sexual side effects. He also noted that he never had issues with sexual problems before using Propecia.

However, this plaintiff, like so many others, continued suffering from these sexual side effects even after he stopped taking Propecia. He claims in his Propecia lawsuit that Merck concealed the side effect information from the medical community and general public. He is requesting compensatory damages for the injuries he experienced.

History of Propecia Side Effects

Propecia, also known as finasteride, received its approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997. In its 15 plus years on the market, over a million men have used Propecia in the United States. It has been estimated that the Propecia side effect rate could be up to 39%. This is a staggering number and many have wondered why Propecia has not been recalled because of it.

Merck has known about the link between long-term side effects and Propecia for several years now. In fact, in 2003 there was a study conducted that indicated up to 50% of the men who experienced side effects while taking Propecia continued to experience those same side effects even though they stopped taking the drug.

Some of the severe sexual side effects that have been linked to Propecia include the following:

  • Abnormal ejaculation
  • Cancer of the prostate
  • Diminished libido
  • Failure of the endocrine system
  • Male breast cancer
  • Testicular pain
  • Lower ejaculatory volume
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Peyronie’s disease (penile curvature)
  • Problems with ejaculation

There has also been side effect linked to Propecia that were not sexual in nature. There have been complaints that have included cognitive issues, severe depression, and even thoughts of suicide.
