Professions Posing Highest Risk of Asbestos Exposure & Mesothelioma Diagnosis

By Andrea Gressman

shipyard worker asbestos exposureThere have been millions of people who have experienced asbestos exposure across the United States. It is estimated that approximately 3,000 people receive an asbestosis or mesothelioma cancer diagnosis each and every year due to asbestos exposure. However, there are a number of professions that pose a higher risk of asbestos exposure than others. Here are some of those professions:

Industries and Professions Directly Associated with Asbestos Exposure:

* Aerospace professionals
* Asbestos abatement
* Asbestos mining professionals
* Asbestos product manufacturing workers

* Automotive and mechanical friction professionals
* Aviation professionals
* Construction workers
* Insulation workers
* Longshore workers
* Maritime workers
* Military professionals
* Non-asbestos product manufacturing professionals
* Railroad workers
* Shipyard construction and repair workers
* Utility professionals
* Working with chemicals
* Working with iron and steel
* Working with petrochemicals
* Working with textiles
* Working with tires and rubber

It is important to realize that this list is not exclusive and that there are a number of other industries that have been associated with some degree of asbestos exposure as well.  There have been reports of asbestos exposed job sites in all 50 states as well as in the District of Columbia. There are also a number of places reported to have been exposed to asbestos where you would never expect to find that type of material. These job sites often go unnoticed until it is too late and then is only discovered after someone is diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Anyone Can Develop Asbestosis or Mesothelioma Due to Asbestos Exposure

Literally anyone can be exposed to asbestos and later develop mesothelioma or asbestosis as a result. It is pretty obvious to see why an employee of an asbestos exposed job site would develop mesothelioma but when a worker is exposed to this toxic substance their family and friends are typically exposed to the asbestos as well.

The employee can bring the asbestos into their vehicles and home through their shoes, clothing, and other items that have exposed to the asbestos at the job site.

Although mesothelioma usually takes 30 to 40 years to develop into the mesothelioma cancer and then subsequently be diagnosed, sadly there have been cases of children developing and being diagnosed with mesothelioma as well. Mesothelioma does not just strike the American worker but has also been diagnosed in political figures, sports professionals, entertainers, scientists, and many more.

    My father (also a carpenter construction worker) died of “oat cell” carcinoma in 1968 when I was 13. He may have been one of the first. He worked with asbestos siding and roofing. Would that be included? I was denied a father for the most important years of my life.
