Pradaxa Lawsuits Seek Responsibility for Wrongful Deaths

By Christina Drury

Pradaxa bleeding injuriesEach year, several people suffer from disorders that call for a blood thinner – also known as an anticoagulant – to help prevent a heart attack or stroke. Two types of anticoagulants are currently popular in the market: warfarin and Pradaxa. Pradaxa was introduced as a competitor to warfarin at the end of 2010 and was widely hailed as a substitute for warfarin which had dominated the market up until that point. It wasn’t until 2011, when the apparent problems with uncontrollable bleeding as a side effect of Pradaxa came to light, that patients and doctors alike began to realize that the medication may not have been the answer.
Pradaxa Bleeding Side Effects

Due to the large number of deaths associated with Pradaxa, there have been questions as to whether or not the FDA thoroughly evaluated the drug or rushed it into the market. The FDA published a report stating that there was no apparent increased risk in terms of Pradaxa side effects as opposed to warfarin, but failed to note in the report that there is no known antidote for Pradaxa internal bleeding, which can lead to increased risk of fatality.

The main complaint in terms of Pradaxa side effects is the fact that most patients were not informed of the serious risks of uncontrollable bleeding that could occur. As a result, Pradaxa lawsuit plaintiff claim that the wrongful deaths associated with the use of Pradaxa could have been avoided with full disclosure.

Why Pradaxa Can be Fatal

Pradaxa is commonly compared to warfarin, another drug that is designed to prevent blood clots or stroke. While they both serve the same purpose, the main difference between the two is that warfarin has an antidote – Vitamin K – while Pradaxa does not. This makes it very difficult to stop the internal bleeding that may occur with Pradaxa use.

In 2011 alone, there were 542 reported deaths associated with Pradaxa use while only 72 deaths were associated with the use of warfarin. Granted, even 72 deaths is too many; but compared to Pradaxa with several hundred deaths and no antidote, the safety has been called into question.

The Federal Aviation Administration is also concerned about the safety of Pradaxa and has not approved it for use by their airmen with concerns for the possibility of deaths due to internal bleeding should they fall.
