Pradaxa Lawsuits Grow Amid Hundreds of Reports of Bleeding Deaths and Pradaxa Side Effects

By Andrea Gressman

Pradaxa lawsuitDespite the many Pradaxa lawsuits being filed against Boehringer Ingelheim, the manufacturer of Pradaxa – a prescription drug used to stop blood clots and strokes – the drug is still widely used today. According to an August 27, 2012 Berlin Ad Hoc News report, Pradaxa is being used in over 70 different countries around the world and has reached “one million patient-years of combined prescription time.”

However, one is left to wonder why the use of Pradaxa remains so popular when it has more reports of side effects than any other drug on the market today. According to an August 19, 2012 article by USA Today, there were 542 deaths attributed to Pradaxa last year and 3,781 total Pradaxa side effects reported. So many Pradaxa lawsuits have been filed as a result of these side effects that they have now been combined to create a Pradaxa lawsuit MDL to help expedite resolution of the Pradaxa lawsuits.

Pradaxa Lawsuits Continue to Grow

Pradaxa is a blood-thinning medication produced by Boehringer Ingelheim. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has been primarily used as an aide in the treatment of heart conditions. However, a number of patients taking Pradaxa have complained that it was doing a lot more than just thinning their blood – it was also causing severe internal bleeding.

Many of the Plaintiffs filing Pradaxa lawsuits allege that taking Pradaxa caused them to suffer multiple side effects. These Pradaxa side effects include the following:

* Gastrointestinal bleeding
* Bleeding ulcers
* Excessive bleeding
* Internal bleeding
* Hemorrhaging

These severe Pradaxa bleeding side effects have spawned a growing number of Pradaxa lawsuits filed by victims. Due to the high number of Pradaxa lawsuits already filed and the number of Pradaxa lawsuits expected to be filed, a central court was established in Illinois to handle the claims. The Pradaxa lawsuit MDL (No. 2385) continues to add cases nearly every week, and litigation continues in other courts throughout the country. On July 25, 2012, Judge David Herndon issued an order denying attempts by Boehringer to dismiss the Pradaxa bleeding lawsuits pending in the Pradaxa MDL.

As the number of Pradaxa lawsuits continues to grow, it is hard to believe that the medical community, as well as the drug manufacturer, is ignoring the obvious risk this drug poses.
