Pradaxa Lawsuits for Bleeding Victims Expedited by Judge
By Andrea Gressman
On October 4, 2012, a federal judge issued an order to speed up the process of filing a Pradaxa lawsuit. Judge David Herndon is now allowing Pradaxa lawsuits to be filed directly into the Pradaxa Federal MDL by entering a Case Management Order. This is certainly good news for the thousands of Pradaxa internal bleeding victims across the nation.
Pradaxa is a well-known drug designed to thin the blood to help prevent strokes and clotting of blood in atrial fibrillation patients. A Wall Street Journal report indicated revenue earnings of over $1 billion in 70 countries by manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim. Despite its financial success, however, Pradaxa has been linked to hundreds of reports of severe bleeding side effects that are sometimes fatal.
A large number of Pradaxa lawsuits are expected; therefore, the Pradaxa lawsuits will be handled in Illinois by a recently formed central court. The case is known as In Re: Pradaxa Product Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2385). It will be held in Illinois’ Southern District. Over 100 Pradaxa side effects lawsuits have been filed as of September 2012.
Boehringer Ingelheim attempted a dismissal regarding lawsuits pertaining to Pradaxa bleeding. However, an order issued by Judge David Herndon on July 24, 2012 denied these attempts.
Last month a warning was issued in the American Medical Association journal regarding Pradaxa. It stated that the FDA approved Pradaxa a bit too soon, with possible oversights about key side effects in the preliminary trials. These evidently showed the lack of an antidote for internal bleeding caused by Pradaxa.
The news came following a December 7, 2011 issued warning indicating a Pradaxa investigation was underway by the FDA. This followed reports on more than expected injuries and deaths related to the drug. An August 19, 2012 report provided by USA Today claimed that 3,781 Pradaxa side effect reports and 542 death reports were received by the FDA. These reports are from those who used Pradaxa last year, which is more than all other medications from the previous year.
