Parents File Zoloft Birth Defect Lawsuit Alleging SSRI Drug Caused Multiple Birth Defects and Heart Defect
By Scott Hardy
A couple filed the latest Zoloft birth defect lawsuit in Pennsylvania earlier this month. The couple alleges that Zoloft caused their child to be born with multiple congenital birth defects and could have been avoided if she was warned that Zoloft can cause birth defects if taken while pregnant. Birth defect lawsuits allege Zoloft, Paxil and other SSRI antidepressant medications cause Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN), Atrial Septal Defects (ASD), ventricular septal defects (VSD), abdominal birth defects (omphalocele), cranial birth defects (craniosynotosis), aorta coarctation, hypoplastic right or left heart syndrome, transposition of the great arteries (TGA), tetralogy of fallot (TOF), spina bifida and club feet and other congenital birth defects. Zoloft birth defect class action lawsuits make special mention that all of mothers of children with SSRI related birth defects took the antidepressant exactly as prescribed by their doctors and had no idea that Pfizer and other SSRI antidepressant drug makers knew their drugs can cause birth defects.
The mother who filed this Zoloft birth defect lawsuit started taking 2004 and took it through 2005 while she was pregnant. Her Zoloft heart defect lawsuit states that neither the plaintiffs or the mother’s obstetrician were informed by Pfizer that Zoloft can cause birth defects. After speaking with a birth defect attorney the parents decided to file their Zoloft birth defect lawsuit. Parents of children with birth defects should always speak with a birth defect attorney. Only an attorney who works Zoloft, Paxil or other SSRI antidepressant birth defect cases can determine if you have a case that is worth pursuing.
The Pennsylvanian couple who filed their Zoloft birth defect lawsuit allege that if the future mother was warned of the potential risk of birth defects she wouldn’t have taken Zoloft, or any other SSRI antidepressant, while pregnant. She, along with dozens of other mothers, allege that SSRI medication like Zoloft and Paxil cause severe birth defects if taken while pregnant like Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN), Atrial Septal Defects (ASD), ventricular septal defects (VSD), abdominal birth defects (omphalocele), cranial birth defects (craniosynotosis), aorta coarctation, hypoplastic right or left heart syndrome, transposition of the great arteries (TGA), tetralogy of fallot (TOF), spina bifida and club feet.
As with other Zoloft birth defect lawsuits this particular Zoloft lawsuit includes mention that the birth defect has a permanent and lasting effect on the child and family. Heart defects caused by Zoloft require lifelong monitoring, multiple surgeries and many other financial and emotional burdens on the families involved. Zoloft birth defect lawsuits often include references to a study that Pfizer performed which showed that Zoloft could cause birth defects in animals but didn’t warn patients taking the drug of their findings. Pfizer conducted animal trials which found that Zoloft caused severe side effects in animal fetuses. Typical Zoloft birth defect lawsuits state that even though Pfizer knew of the risk of birth defects Pfizer did not warn doctors and their patients of the risk of taking Zoloft, or any other SSRI antidepressant, while pregnant.
In some cases certain families have opted to file a Zoloft birth defect class action lawsuit. But filing a Zoloft class action lawsuit may not be in your best interest. It’s important that parents of children with Zoloft birth defects speak with a qualified Zoloft attorney to determine their best course of action. This may be filing an individual lawsuit against Pfizer. If your baby was born with a birth defect and you were taking Zoloft, Paxil, another antidepressant medication or some other prescription medication, you should speak with an experienced birth defect attorney to determine if filing a Zoloft birth defect class action lawsuit is best for you.
