NY Legislator Diagnosed with Mesothelioma from Asbestos Exposure

Although mesothelioma, a cancer that can occur in the heart, lungs and stomach area, has been around for many years many still have never heard of it and do not realize that it is typically caused by being exposed to asbestos, a mineral that was frequently used in various products as early as the 1940s. However, a well-known politician was recently diagnosed with the cancer and his diagnosis could dramatically increase awareness to the link between mesothelioma and asbestos exposure.
William J. Lindsay, age 67, is a politician in the state of New York and recently started an experimental mesothelioma cancer treatment program. According to the LongIslandPress.com, Lindsay is currently the presiding officer of the Suffolk County Legislature in Long Island.
Lindsay previously worked as an electrician and labor leader prior to becoming a politician, and says he developed mesothelioma as a result of being exposed to asbestos in his previous career.
Sadly, mesothelioma has a very low mortality rate, especially if the cancer is diagnosed at an advanced state. Lindsay has reportedly opted to go with an alternative mesothelioma cancer treatment that he recently started at the National Institutes for Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
Lindsay has already undergone several procedures to treat his disease, including the removal of one of his lungs in 2012. He also went through radiation treatment and was told in August 2012 that he was in remission. However, in January 2013 his mesothelioma came back.
Lindsay is not the only electrician who has faced a mesothelioma diagnosis. This profession is at a very high risk for asbestos exposure because the substance was frequently used in insulation and other construction materials that have yet to be removed from buildings and other structures that were built when using asbestos use was a common practice.
