NuvaRing blood clot Recently a young woman who suffered deep vein thrombosis (DVT) while using NuvaRing birth control filed a lawsuit against the device’s manufacturers and marketers. The NuvaRing DVT lawsuit was filed in New Jersey Superior Court, Bergen County on September 18, 2012, and names as Defendants: Merck & Co., Organon USA, Inc., Organon Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc., N.V. Organon, Schering Plough Corporation, and Akzo Nobel, NV.

NuvaRing Lawsuit Details

The Plaintiff, a woman from Picayune, Mississippi, suffered a life-threatening type of NuvaRing blood clot injury known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) around September 2010 while using NuvaRing birth control.

The NuvaRing deep vein thrombosis lawsuit issued by the Plaintiff indicated that the Defendants did not give adequate warnings of the side effects of NuvaRing. These side effects include the following:

* Blood clots
* Pulmonary embolism
* Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

* Heart attack
* Stroke
* Death

Furthermore, the NuvaRing DVT lawsuit asserts that a synthetic, third-generation progestin, etonogestrel, which is used as a starter in NuvaRing, did not receive adequate testing and that the Defendants either knew or should have known to include information pertaining to the adverse side effects of NuvaRing, including blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, heart attack, stroke and death in the contraceptive’s package insert.

NuvaRing is marketed as being an innovator in preventing pregnancy as it offers month-long protection and is as effective as other methods of birth control, including birth control pills. Though the package insert does identify similar NuvaRing side effects as those contained in birth control pills, the Plaintiff’s NuvaRing lawsuit says the information is misleading as is based on studies related to birth control pills, rather than from studies associated with NuvaRing.

There have been many studies that have linked NuvaRing with serious side effects, including blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, heart attacks, and stroke.

The New England Journal of Medicine has published research indicating that women who used combined hormonal devices such as NuvaRing more than doubled, and sometimes even tripled, their side effect risk for heart attack and stroke compared to women who used alternative methods of hormonal birth control.

The British Medical Journal published a study a month earlier that found the strong possibility of NuvaRing users having a 90% higher chance of experiencing a dangerous blood clot than those using oral contraceptives containing levonorgestrel.
