Number of Asbestos Mesothelioma Lawsuits & Settlements Continue To Rise

By Andrea Gressman

asbestos mesothelioma symptomsIn the last 30 years, many mesothelioma lawsuit attorneys have experienced a steady increase in the number of asbestos mesothelioma lawsuits they have had to handle. It has been reported that asbestos mesothelioma defendants have paid out a higher price in court awards than any other mass litigation to ever occur in the United States. More than 730,000 mesothelioma victims have stepped forward in the last 30 years, totaling more than $70 billion won through mesothelioma lawsuit settlements.

It is believed that the increase in mesothelioma lawsuits and mesothelioma settlements in recent years is a direct result of the education and awareness that is being brought to the public. Previously, the condition of mesothelioma was completely unheard of let alone the fact that someone may be to blame for the asbestos exposure that caused the mesothelioma. Although there is far more awareness than before, there is still a long way to go in order to provide all the asbestos victims with the justice they deserve.

Mesothelioma is caused by an exposure to asbestos, particularly an inhalation of asbestos particles. Unfortunately, the symptoms of mesothelioma do not generally appear until many years after the person was exposed. Anyone with a past history of asbestos exposure experiencing the symptoms of mesothelioma should speak with a physician for accurate diagnosis immediately.

Asbestos Exposure Leads to Mesothelioma Side Effect

Disturbed asbestos can release microscopic asbestos fibers into the air that, when inhaled, become lodged in the lining of the lungs. These fibers can lead to scarring and the development of tumors on the lungs. As time goes on, the condition associated with lung scarring and the development of tumors can worsen, which leads to mesothelioma cancer. Studies have discovered that as little as 6 weeks of daily exposure to asbestos can lead to mesothelioma.

Diagnosing Mesothelioma

The process involved with diagnosing mesothelioma is rather lengthy. In fact, it takes approximately 35 years for the full development of mesothelioma to occur, meaning it can go undetected for several years. Keep in mind that the symptoms of mesothelioma are similar to those associated with lung cancer, which can cause misdiagnosis.

Some of the ways a doctor can determine the presence of mesothelioma are via clinical and radiological testing procedures. Additionally, doctors may also take biopsies of tissue to search for the presence of mesothelioma cancer cells. Once the presence of mesothelioma has been confirmed, patients may undergo a number of treatments including radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery.

The Three Types of Mesothelioma

There are three types of mesothelioma – pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma, and pericardial mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma.  It occurs in the thin lining surrounding the lungs called the pleura. Peritoneal mesothelioma occurs within a person’s abdominal cavity, also called the peritoneum. Finally, pericardial mesothelioma occurs within the pericardium, which is the lining surrounding the heart.

Anyone discovering the presence of mesothelioma may opt to talk to a qualified mesothelioma lawsuit attorney in order to pursue compensation. Receiving compensation is important as it can help cover the cost of mesothelioma cancer treatment options, which can be very costly.
