Natren Target of Probiotic Supplement Fraud Class Action Lawsuit Investigation

By Sarah Pierce

Natren Healthy TrinityProbiotics have become the latest health craze to hit American grocery stores and pharmacies. The trend started with probiotic-enhanced food such as yogurt and health drinks and now encompasses probiotic supplements that are designed to be taken every day.

The goal of probiotics is often to support a healthy immune system or promote healthy digestion. The problem with these types of homeopathic remedies is that probiotics are not regulated by the FDA, which means there’s no guarantee of what kind of bacteria you’re actually getting nor if the product contains sufficient enough amounts of probiotics to work as advertised.

“There are lots of people making extravagant claims, and there’s a snake-oil component to this. Since the FDA does not approve these supplements, there’s the opportunity to take preliminary research and run with it from the marketing standpoint,” Dr. Athos Bousvaros, an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and Associate Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program at Children’s Hospital Boston, told NPR in a 2006 article titled “Q&A: Pros & Cons of Probiotics.”

That’s why a class action lawsuit investigation has been launched into probiotic supplement manufacturers to look into consumer claims of false advertising.

One of the leading probiotic supplement makers in the world is Natren, Inc., which markets a large line of probiotics for adults, children and even pets.

One of Natren’s most popular probiotic supplements – and most potent — is Natren Healthy Trinity. Each capsule of Healthy Trinity contains a minimum 30 billion colony forming units (cfu) of three powerful super strains of bacteria called Lactobacillus acidophilus NAS, Bifidobacterium bifidum Malyoth, and Lactobacillus bulgaricus LB-51.

These bacterial strains are also found in Natren’s Healthy Start System of probiotic powders and capsules, and individually in Bifido Factor, Megadophilus and Digesta-Lac.

Natren’s line of probiotics for kids – Life Start – also contains a strain of Bifidobacterium that is the predominant organism in the large intestine of breast-fed babies, according to Natren’s website.

Some consumers have alleged that probiotic supplements like those manufactured by Natren may not work as advertised, and that they were misled into purchasing a product that was advertised as “proven” to work, despite lacking credible evidence to support these advertising claims.

If you purchased Natren probiotics or a product from another probiotic manufacturer, and did not experience results, you may be able to participate in a class action lawsuit settlement.

  2. Miriam Mesa says:

I have been having what feels like worms moving in my abdomin area / intestines now for over 8 years, which I attribute to when I bought and started taking Healthy Trinity probiotics in November 2008. I started noticing the movement in my intestines a couple of weeks after taking Healthy Trinity probiotics, so I opened one capsule up to see what was inside and to my astonishment a few filamentous worm like organisms emerged that moved around. I was very disturbed by this and stopped taking the probiotics and to this date, many years later, still feel the organisms in my intestine multiplying and causing havoc and I have gained a lot of weight as if these organisms feed on my nutrients. According to Natren the (live) organisms are engineered as to not be destroyed by the acids in the stomach……..Well, they can not be killed by anything else either and these genetically modified strains of worm filament probiotics have multiplied in my intestine causing horrific havoc.
