Januvia Sales Drop as Cancer Risks are Exposed

Merck, the maker of Januvia, is seeing sales of Januvia drop this year. Januvia was one of the most popular drugs to treat diabetes for years, but the company finally faced falling sales during the first quarter of 2013. According to CEO Kenneth Frazier, overall sales dropped 9 percent so far in 2013 to $10.7 billion.

Patent issues are one reason Merck saw decreased performance, but there’s no denying that lower sales are also to blame. In addition to manufacturing Januvia, Merck also makes Propecia, which is linked to impotence and has its own class action lawsuits heating up. In fact, singular sales of Merck’s products fell a shocking 75 percent during the first quarter, while Januvia sales dropped 4 percent.
