Fresenius Medical Care Sending Kidney Failure Patients Home

By John Curran

GranuFlo recall lawsuitFresenius Medical Care recognizes that hospitals need to reduce costs among all of its patients. So it has created a new program that will send kidney failure patients home as quickly as possible. More than five million Americans won’t have to worry about the company’s GranuFlo heart attack side effect risks, however.

Instead, rather than being in a hospital with knowledgeable staff, Fresenius Medical Care says that kidney dialysis patients will have daily weight monitoring and offsite data reporting. In addition, they can call a 24-hour nursing hotline for help, if they are physically able to do so. The company is hopeful that hospitals will need to save costs with Medicare cuts coming and improve their bottom line.

The last time that Fresenius Medical Care opted for remote, limited monitoring, patients suffered heart attacks and even died. The company’s dialysis product, GranuFlo, caused serious problems, including up to NaturaLyte heart attack risks compared to other medications. Fresenius Medical Care warned its own centers about these GranuFlo sudden death risks in November 2011.

Unfortunately, other patients did not get the same warning until March 2012. In fact, the company is still marketing these treatment options to other centers, and will likely do so with its UFComplete therapy as well. Even if elevated bicarbonate levels lead to NaturaLyte heart attack risks, the company will still market them until the FDA issues a recall.

As hospitals outsource their own kidney dialysis treatment, there can only be an increase in GranuFlo sudden death risks. The company already provides some services to more than 1,000 medical centers, and sees a market of five million Americans who suffer from congestive heart failure patients.
