Fosamax Tied to Femur Fractures & Other Side Effects

By Christina Drury

Fosamax side effectsIf you have taken Fosamax for osteoporosis or other bone weakening diseases, you may be at increased risk for developing Fosamax side effects that can be debilitating. Among the many Fosamax side effects that have been noted in recent studies include atypical femur fractures – the most common Fosamax side effect – which can cause prodromal pain and delayed healing. Due to Fosamax side effects that are becoming more prominent, hundreds of pending Fosamax lawsuits are awaiting trial in New Jersey.

What is Fosamax?

Fosamax is a prescription drug that falls in the category of bisphosphonates. It is used to treat osteoporosis as well as other bone weakening diseases including Paget’s. Manufactured by Merck, Fosamax was approved by the FDA for use in the treatment of osteoporosis and related bone weakening diseases in 1995. A study that was published in October 2012 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism analyzed the claims of 81 patients who while on Fosamax experienced one or several atypical femur fractures. These patients were studied over a 9 ½ year period in which each one of them took a bisphosphonate, with 94% taking Fosamax.

Is Fosamax Truly Beneficial?

In 2010, the FDA issued warnings that patients who are taking Fosamax are at increased risk of experiencing Fosamax femur fractures as well as other Fosamax side effects. In addition, there was a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine that brought awareness to the fact that taking Fosamax for a period of longer than five years brings little benefit to the patient.

Pending Litigation in New Jersey for Fosamax Side Effects

Patients who have taken Fosamax and subsequently experienced painful and debilitating Fosamax side effects are urged to contact attorneys who are in proceeding with Fosamax injury lawsuits. Currently there are hundreds of Fosamax lawsuits pending in New Jersey Superior Court as a consolidated litigation. Each lawsuit will have an individual outcome depending on the circumstances surrounding the plaintiff’s claims and medical history.

Those who can prove injury as a direct result of Fosamax use may be eligible for compensation due to pain and suffering, medical expense, lost wages and other injuries that may have been sustained as a Fosamax side effect. Contacting an attorney for an analysis of your case will determine whether your injuries are severe enough to proceed in filing a complaint in the consolidated litigation.
