FDA Didn’t Learn from SSRI Antidepressant Birth Defect Lawsuits
By John Curran
The federal Food and Drug Administration is not yet a target of claims by Prozac birth defect class action lawsuit attorneys. That doesn’t mean that they don’t use the agency and its lack of pressure on manufacturers like Eli Lilly and Co. to make their arguments. Perhaps that may have played a role in how the FDA is looking at antidepressant birth defect side effects.
Or maybe not. In yet another questionable plan, it was only two weeks ago that the agency created a database and doctor training program for immunosuppressive drugs that cause similar birth defect side effects. While Zoloft birth defect side effects can be devastating, one-in-five organ transplant patients who exposed their fetuses to the drugs saw birth defects.
The agency works hand-in-hand with the National Institutes of Health. Yet like the complaints of Prozac birth defects lawsuit lawyers, it could be argued that the FDA delayed the updated warnings and pregnancy registry for too long. After all, the NIH noted the elevated risk for birth defect side effects in drugs like CellCept and Myfortic some three years ago.
It’s becoming more and more clear that couples who are planning on having children have to be especially careful when taking a variety of medications. Unfortunately, since many pregnancy tests don’t work until a few weeks after conception, Prozac birth defects side effects are still a very real risk. And they’re difficult for the family and the child to treat and adjust to.
Some of the most common SSRI antidepressant birth defect side effects include holes in the heart, cognitive impairment and skull deformations. These can have a lifelong impact and increase the cost of raising a child by tens of thousands of dollars. That doesn’t include the child and parents trying to adjust to a new situation.
