Doctors Ironic Victims of Disability Insurance Denials

By John Curran

Unum disability insuranceMedical experts are used by Unum claim denial specialists to argue that workers are not truly unable to complete their work and thus do not deserve benefits disability insurance benefits. Doctors are quickly finding out, however, that they might be subject to the same use of fine print to avoid their own payments.

The key example is that of a surgeon who has injured their hand, perhaps because of a slipped scalpel. In some UnumProvident disability insurance policies, as well as those from other providers, the lack of fine motor skills may not be enough for disability benefits. Claim denial specialists can argue that these doctors can still see patients for consultations and other appointments, reports PhysBizTech.

That’s unfortunate because many in the medical field can be stressed trying to provide assistance to the public on little sleep in emergency rooms, as another example. It is possible to review a disability insurance policy, even if it is one provided by an employer. In the case of healthcare professionals, look for language that covers one’s specific specialty and what will happen in the case of serious injury, including mental health issues.

UnumProvident disability insurance policies are also problematic in terms of income. Doctors use incentives, such as those from Medicare, and the policy may only cover base pay. It is a similar problem for salespeople who use a base plus commission compensation plan. There may be little to provide them with the payments that would approximate the average annual commission they provided.

Employees who have disability insurance should watch out for these and numerous other issues. The fine print is what helps claim denial specialists to save their companies’ money. At a time when many are finding that the investments they use to pay for benefits are dropping in value, many are trying to limit what they call fraud, and employees call paying their bills.
