Dilantin & Stevens Johnson Syndrome: One Woman’s Story
By Andrea Gressman
Dilantin has been on the market for many years. However, it’s only been the last few years that the drug has received recognition for some of the severe side effects it has been linked to, one of which is Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS). This is a severe Dilantin side effect that has caused severe pain and a number of fatalities.
One such account occurred over a decade ago. A woman, only referred to as Cindy, provided an interview about how her mother was prescribed Dilantin after the physician thought she had experienced a stroke. However, the drug that was given to her in order to help her ended up being the reason for her death as it caused her to develop Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
Cindy claims that her mother had only taken Dilantin for about three weeks when she began to complain of a sore throat. It was at this time that she began to develop a skin rash as well. Her doctor assumed the rash was caused by an allergic reaction to something she ate. Her mother was kept on Dilantin and the rash continued to get worse. At this point her mother could not swallow and the rash was in her mouth and on her tongue. The doctor was called again and he said to finish taking the prescription but to not get it refilled. Her daughter believes that if the doctor would have taken her mother off the Dilantin sooner it could have possibly save her life.
From there Cindy describes the severe pain her mother was in. On one particularly bad night the doctors finally performed blood work on her mother and knew right away what the problem was: she had Stevens Johnson Syndrome.
Cindy explained that her mother was a 74-year-old “viable” woman before she started taking Dilantin. However, because Dilantin caused the Stevens Johnson Syndrome her mother died a severely painful death, which the horror of that pain affects her daughter to this day.
Cindy’s mother is not the only patient that has suffered from Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) due to the use of Dilantin. Many have opted to file Dilantin lawsuits in order to receive the compensation for the pain and suffering, medical expense, and lost wages that Stevens Johnson Syndrome is known to cause. The one common claim for many of those who have filed Dilantin lawsuits is that they were not properly warned that SJS was a potential side effect.
