Bayer Continues to Pay Yasmin/Yaz Injury Settlements

By Anne Bucher

Bayer Yaz settlementsBayer Pharmaceuticals, the maker of the birth control pills Yaz, Yasmin and Ocella, has been hit with thousands of lawsuits from plaintiffs who claim they suffered blood clotting injuries. Bayer initially set aside $1.5 billion to settle lawsuits from plaintiffs who suffered Yaz blood clots. However, the company has recently set aside another $24 million to settle claims from plaintiffs who claim they suffered serious gallbladder injuries after taking Yaz, Yasmin or Ocella.

Yaz, Ocella and Yasmin contain a hormone called drospirenone. This hormone can be found in a variety of other birth control pills, including Beyaz, Safyral and the Yaz and Yasmin generics: Gianvi, Loryna, Syeda and Zarah.

In 2009, the federal Food & Drug Administration (FDA) required Bayer to update the product labels to include warnings about the risk of blood clots and other significant injuries associated with drospirenone birth control pills.  In one of the studies commissioned by the FDA, Bayer’s contraceptive pills were associated with twice as many blood clots as other birth control pills. Other studies have shown that Bayer’s pills may be associated with other serious side effects such as:

  • Stroke
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Gallbladder injuries

Plaintiffs Accuse Bayer of Misleading Marketing and Downplaying Health Risks

Many women have suffered from debilitating blood clots after taking Yasmin or Yaz. Some young women have even died from Yaz blood clots. Plaintiffs in Yasmin lawsuits claim they never would have selected drospirenone birth control pills had they known about the increased blood clot risk.

Plaintiffs in these drug injury lawsuits accuse Bayer of misleading marketing. They claim that Yaz and Yasmin were advertised as being effective at treating premenstrual syndrome and acne. The plaintiffs claim Bayer grossly overstated the pills’ health benefits and downplayed the risks associated with the product. Studies showed that Yaz was effective at treating mild-to-moderate acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, a relatively rare condition.

Generic Version of Yaz to be Approved in 2014

It is important to take legal action against Bayer to hold the company accountable for its product safety. As a new generic version of Yaz is slated to be released in 2014, the number of women who are at risk from drospirenone-containing birth control is certain to rise. Actavis just won a ruling against Bayer, claiming that the Yaz patent is invalid. In 2012, Yaz sales reached nearly $350 million.

Take Legal Action

So far, more than 10,000 women have taken legal action against Bayer. If you have suffered from Yaz blood clots or related injuries such as pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis or stroke, visit the Yaz/Yasmin, Beyaz & Ocella Birth Control Pill Class Action Lawsuit Settlement & Investigation to learn more about your legal rights. You may be entitled to receive a settlement for your injuries. Thousands of women have already filed lawsuits against the company and are prepared to receive a minimum of $2,000 for their gallbladder injuries. Women who suffered Yaz blood clots are likely to receive substantially higher compensation for their injuries. When you submit your information on the investigation page, a Yaz lawyer will conduct a free case evaluation to determine whether you qualify to file a Yaz lawsuit.
