Steel River Systems agreed to a $200,000 class action settlement to resolve claims that it failed to prevent a 2021 data breach due to subpar cybersecurity measures.

The settlement benefits individuals who received a data breach notification letter from Steel River Systems informing them that their personal information and/or personal information was compromised in a data breach in July 2022.

According to plaintiffs in the data breach class action lawsuit, Steel River Systems failed to properly protect highly confidential information stored on its network. The company’s subpar cybersecurity measures allowed hackers to access sensitive consumers for over a month, the class action lawsuit contends.

Steel River Systems is a nationally licensed collection agency based in Illinois.

Steel River Systems hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $200,000 settlement to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive up to $310 for ordinary losses such as bank fees, communication charges, credit expenses and up to three hours of lost time compensated at a rate of $25 per hour.

Class members who experienced extraordinary data breach losses resulting from fraud or identity theft can receive larger payments of $5,000 for these damages.

As part of the settlement, the company also agreed to enhance its cybersecurity measures to better protect consumer information.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Dec. 21, 2023.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Jan. 3, 2024.

In order to receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by Dec. 21, 2023.
