Roper St. Francis Healthcare agreed to pay $1.5 million to resolve claims it failed to prevent a 2020 data breach.
The settlement benefits individuals who received a data breach notification informing them their information may have been compromised in a Roper St. Francis Healthcare data breach in October 2020.
The Roper St. Francis system is made up of four hospitals, six emergency rooms and 117 facilities in South Carolina’s Lowcountry region.
Plaintiffs in the Roper St. Francis class action lawsuit alleged the not-for-profit healthcare provider could have prevented the 2020 data breach by implementing reasonable cybersecurity measures.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive up to $325 in reimbursement for bank fees, credit expenses, other data breach-related expenses, as well as up to four hours of lost time at a rate of $20 per hour. Class members can also receive up to $3,250 for extraordinary data breach losses such as fraudulent charges and identity theft damages.
In addition to expense reimbursement, all class members are eligible to receive a year of free credit monitoring services.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is April 30, 2024.
