Students who overpaid their health insurance premiums between 2019 and 2021 may be able to receive a refund from a program with UnitedHealthcare and the New York State Department of Financial Services.

Refunds are available to students who had an overpayment of insurance premiums applied to their UnitedHealthcare Student Resources Insurance accounts due to incorrect rates used for certain 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 plan years.

UnitedHealthcare reportedly overcharged certain students for insurance premiums during the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 plan years due to incorrect rates. These overpayments allegedly caused students financial harm.

UnitedHealthcare Student Resources is a student insurance plan provider owned by UnitedHealthcare.

No wrongdoing was admitted, but students can benefit from an insurance refund program with UnitedHealthcare and the New York State Department of Financial Services.

Under the terms of the health insurance refund program, students will receive a refund based on the amount they overpaid in premiums during eligible plan years. No refund estimates are available at this time.

UnitedHealthcare has also worked with the New York State Department of Financial Services to implement student plan rate changes and prevent further health insurance premium overpayments.

There is no exclusion or objection deadline for this insurance refund.

There was no final approval hearing for the refund program.

To receive a refund through electronic means or to an updated address, eligible students must submit a valid election form by Aug. 6, 2024. Students who do not submit an election form will receive their refunds by check to the last address on their file.
