The Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research agreed to a $52.5 million class action settlement to resolve claims it shared subscriber information with third parties without getting consumer consent.
The settlement benefits Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research direct purchasers whose information was included on the lists obtained in discovery that were transmitted to third parties between June 16 and July 30, 2016.
Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim the Mayo Foundation violated their privacy rights by sharing their information with third parties without consent. This information sharing allegedly violated Michigan’s Preservation of Personal Privacy Act.
The Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research is a non-profit organization that funds research and medical education and shares research findings in various publications.
The Mayo Foundation hasn’t admitted wrongdoing but agreed to a $52.5 million class action lawsuit settlement to end the claims.
Under the settlement terms, class members can receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. Class counsel estimates that each claimant will receive between $540 and $700, though actual payments may be higher or lower depending on the number of participating class members and other factors.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is May 13, 2024.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for May 29, 2024.
Class members must submit a valid claim form by May 15, 2024, to receive a settlement payment.
