Medical technology company Haemonetics agreed to pay $8.74 million to resolve a class action lawsuit claiming it collected the fingerprints of blood plasma donors, in violation of Illinois biometric laws.

The settlement benefits individuals who scanned their fingers at a plasma donation facility in Illinois and whose information was shared with or stored by Haemonetics between Feb. 4, 2016, and Feb. 8, 2024.

A Haemonetics class action lawsuit alleged the company failed to provide proper disclosures and consent agreements to plasma donors before storing their scanned fingerprints, in violation of Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA).

Haemonetics provided finger scan donor management software to various Illinois plasma donation facilities, including Octapharma.

The company hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing in agreeing to the $8.74 million settlement.

Under the terms of the Haemonetics settlement, class members can receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. Payment amounts will vary depending on the number of claims filed, but class counsel estimates each claimant will receive between $250 and $570.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is May 2, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for May 30, 2024.

In order to receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by May 9, 2024.
