The University of Phoenix has agreed to pay $8.75 million to resolve a class action lawsuit claiming it violated federal and Illinois privacy laws by sharing student information with third parties.

The University of Phoenix settlement benefits individuals who were enrolled at the University of Phoenix between April 1, 2023, and Oct. 6, 2026, or who were enrolled at the University of Phoenix in Illinois during the same period.

The University of Phoenix is a for-profit college that offers online courses to students.

According to a class action lawsuit, the University of Phoenix violated federal and state privacy laws by sharing student information with third parties, such as Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. Each class member is estimated to receive $25. However, exact payments will vary depending on the number of participating class members and the amount deducted for various expenses, such as attorneys’ fees and administrative costs.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Nov. 5, 2026.

The final approval hearing for the University of Phoenix settlement is scheduled for Nov. 20, 2026.
