Coinbase Breach Class Action Lawsuit Overview

  • Who: A Texas man is suing Coinbase, the cryptocurrency trading platform.
  • Why: The man alleges his Coinbase account was breached to make a $50,000 unauthorized transaction. He says at least 1,000 other Coinbase accounts have also been breached.
  • Where: The plaintiff is looking to represent Coinbase users nationwide.

A Texas man says Coinbase violated the law by allowing a breach of his cryptocurrency account that led to a $50,000 unauthorized purchase made with his money, according to a new class action lawsuit.

Lead plaintiff Adam Alfia filed the class action against Coinbase Global, Inc. on Nov. 8 in a California federal court, alleging breach of contract, negligence, and fraud.

Alfia says he formerly used Coinbase as a way to buy, sell and manage his cryptocurrency.

However, on July 19 this year, Alfia says he logged into his Coinbase account to find that $50,000 in Ethereum had been purchased. Alfia says he did not make this purchase.

The same day, the plaintiff says he logged into his Bank of America account to see if the money had come out. It had. “This caused Mr. Alfia great stress and worry,” the lawsuit states.

Alfia lodged a complaint with Coinbase explaining what had happened. He says Coinbase responded by locking him out of his account for two months.

1K Coinbase Accounts — Or More — Breached Due To Lax Security, Claims Class Action Lawsuit

Alfia believes that at least 1,000 have been harmed by Coinbase not properly securing its accounts from breaches.

He’s looking to represent anyone in the United States who had a Coinbase account that was breached in the last four years.

Alfia is seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs, and a jury trial.

Coinbase is facing mounting litigation alleging its lax security measures have left account holders locked out and victims of theft. A pair of cryptocurrency users filed a class action lawsuit in August saying their Coinbase wallets were either hacked or frozen without warning and their pleas to release their accounts so they could access funds went unheeded by the company.

Earlier in the year, another class action lodged in California claimed that Coinbase randomly locked users out of their accounts for months at a time causing them to lose funds, and even erased accounts in their entirety

I’ve had the same customer service experience and they pretty much oblate the customer saying it was our fault for not keeping our security info safe which I didn’t share with anyone. Be let me know if there a way to join the lawsuit.

Please add me to the lawsuit

On Dec 10,2021, I received an alert from my cell phone text that my Coinbase account’s password had been changed. Then I was completely unable to access my account. I called Coinbase later that day to put a hold on my account. Next day I tried to reinstated my account, after another 24 hours, finally on Dec 12, I was able to reinstate and have access to my account for the first time since Dec 10. I was stunned! Most of my $11,000 in holding was gone, less than $2000 left. Also I checked my checking account, another $3000 was transferred at the same day, Dec 10, to Coinbase for purchasing Bitcoin through Coinbase Pro (which I have never heard of until this thing happened). Typically the transaction should take 2-3 days, but with Coinbase Pro, it was instant! Obviously Coinbase did not make customer aware of this hidden account and safeguard our assets. So total of more than $12,000 + of money vanished!

I called Coinbase immediately, the representative did no help on my dire situation, only stated that there is virtually no chance I would get my money back. I made several other attempts though emails and phone calls with them but got me nowhere.

I was baffled, angry and helpless. Now both of my checking account and Coinbase account suffer greatly, leaves me a dire financial situation. The heartless response from Coinbase just add salt on my wound.

I really appreciate if you can help me in this misfortune.

  5. James Marino says:

I was hacked and lost between 10-16k. Coinbase said nothing they can do about it. Said for my best interest locked me out of my account. All my money gone. Even after they locked my account hacker made a 1k transaction from my bank account listed on coinbase. Thank God the bank gave me that back. Why would anybody risk letting coinbase hold their money. Please feel free to contact me if you wish. If you don’t I’m routing for you. They deserve to pay. I get anxiety every time I get a notification on my phone and I don’t ever want to look in my investment apps anymore. It hurt me and my family terribly. I also contacted the fbi and filed a formal complaint but haven’t heard nothing.

  6. kelby Hein says:

Coinbase locked me out of my account for no apparent reason. I feel like they basically stole my money. I would like to be a part of this lawsuit.

  7. Glenn Dickerson says:

I would like more information. I was hacked for over $100,000. Please contact me.

  8. Joseph Copeland says:

December 20 someone compromised my bank account, paypal, and coinbase. Bank and PayPal made good not coinbase. I was sent a text saying that a transaction was being made and to cancel it push the link. The link did nothing. They claim they can’t do anything.

  9. Samantha Casanova says:

Please add me. Was just hacked and had over $180K stolen from my Coinbase account

  10. Louis Grausso says:

    Please add me
10k drained in minutes. I acted in 3 minutes response to an email saying a changed my password. Tried to lock my account. Gone
