Coinbase Breach Class Action Lawsuit Overview

  • Who: A Texas man is suing Coinbase, the cryptocurrency trading platform.
  • Why: The man alleges his Coinbase account was breached to make a $50,000 unauthorized transaction. He says at least 1,000 other Coinbase accounts have also been breached.
  • Where: The plaintiff is looking to represent Coinbase users nationwide.

A Texas man says Coinbase violated the law by allowing a breach of his cryptocurrency account that led to a $50,000 unauthorized purchase made with his money, according to a new class action lawsuit.

Lead plaintiff Adam Alfia filed the class action against Coinbase Global, Inc. on Nov. 8 in a California federal court, alleging breach of contract, negligence, and fraud.

Alfia says he formerly used Coinbase as a way to buy, sell and manage his cryptocurrency.

However, on July 19 this year, Alfia says he logged into his Coinbase account to find that $50,000 in Ethereum had been purchased. Alfia says he did not make this purchase.

The same day, the plaintiff says he logged into his Bank of America account to see if the money had come out. It had. “This caused Mr. Alfia great stress and worry,” the lawsuit states.

Alfia lodged a complaint with Coinbase explaining what had happened. He says Coinbase responded by locking him out of his account for two months.

1K Coinbase Accounts — Or More — Breached Due To Lax Security, Claims Class Action Lawsuit

Alfia believes that at least 1,000 have been harmed by Coinbase not properly securing its accounts from breaches.

He’s looking to represent anyone in the United States who had a Coinbase account that was breached in the last four years.

Alfia is seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs, and a jury trial.

Coinbase is facing mounting litigation alleging its lax security measures have left account holders locked out and victims of theft. A pair of cryptocurrency users filed a class action lawsuit in August saying their Coinbase wallets were either hacked or frozen without warning and their pleas to release their accounts so they could access funds went unheeded by the company.

Earlier in the year, another class action lodged in California claimed that Coinbase randomly locked users out of their accounts for months at a time causing them to lose funds, and even erased accounts in their entirety

The plaintiff is represented by Evan Selik and Christine Zaouk of MaCathern LLP.

The Coinbase Breach Class Action Lawsuit is Alfia et al., v. Coinbase Global, Inc., Case No. 3:21-cv-08689, in the U.S. District Court Northern District of California.

  1. JACOB COLLINSWORTH says:

Add me, hackers stole 35000 from me.

  2. Anthony Uttariello says:

This happened to me at Coinbase back in August. Similar story to all the rest. Took months for Coinbase to even reply. and when they did. told me it was my fault I was hacked. Had over 10,000 stolen. They told me they saw the hack was from Germany, where they are based. Wouldn’t be surprised if all these hacks are inside jobs by CoinBase. I would much like to be involved in this lawsuit to recoup my stolen money.

    Add me

  4. Rich Hopkins says:

My Coinbase account was hacked on 11/17/21. The bad actors ran away with $83,000. Access to my account was just restored on 12/14/21 after many phone calls and emails and many hours “on-hold” waiting for customer service. The hack of my account looks just like the hack a few months ago of around 6,000 accounts for which Coinbase made reimbursement. The hackers were able to access my Coinbase account and change my Coinbase password and my 2-Factor Authentication password.
Coinbase has laid the blame on me for what appears to be their lack of providing the security necessary to keep their customers’ account safe. They have stated that the hack of my account will not be reimbursable. Please include me in the class action law suit.

I would like to join this suit, hacked out of more than 20k. coinbase will not help

  6. Jake Saulsbury says:

My account was hacked. $32,000 were stolen from my coinbase account. From the time I was on the phone with coinbase customer service my account balance was still $15,000 and they told me my account was locked. When they finally allowed me back into my account days later the remaining balance was only $1,800.

The transaction time on my coinbase account did not match the notification transaction time on my emails I was receiving when the hackers were stealing my money. 305 unauthorized transactions occurred in less than 45 minutes. No security nor red flags to coinbase that illegal activity may be occurring. This needs to change.

    Coinbase offered no support.

Please add me to this class action lawsuit.

    1. Donna says:

Same here.. it seems like Coinbase is in on it. They know there’s nothing you can do about it. It was around the same time I downloaded a browser call brave also

  7. Marina Thompson says:

I coinbase was just hacked and cleared out It was about $14000.
Can I join the law suit. No one at coinbase is helping me. I am only getting a case number. No one is calling me or anything.
What would be my next step legally?

  8. Ken Kronner says:

My account was hacked and approximately $115000.00 was stolen

Please add me to the lawsuit

  9. Miguel Jose Barrera says:

Please add me to the lawsuit. My coinbase account was hacked by someone internally (I suspect), and the account was emptied out. I lost $11,000. I would like to add my case to this lawsuit please. This happened in November 18th 2020.
