Are you a merchant who has used a Square credit card reader to process a transaction?

If so, you may be eligible to join a free Square payment fees class action lawsuit investigation.

Unreasonably high fees have been allegedly imposed on merchants who use a Square credit card reader, according to a payment fees class action lawsuit filed in April 2021.

The merchants who filed the class action allege that the credit card processing fees violated antitrust and unfair competition laws and caused them to lose money.

Square Payment Fees Class Action Lawsuit

A group of four merchants filed a class action lawsuit in April 2021 on behalf of themselves and other businesses in certain states that accept payment with Square’s services.

They claim that the credit card processing fee is imposed as part of a price-fixing agreement among banks.

“The Interchange fee is purely a toll that the credit-card issuing banks, in a collective exercise of monopoly power, decided to levy on each credit card transaction,” according to the Square class action lawsuit.

This class action lawsuit is asking the court to direct the credit card giants to change their rules restraining credit card surcharging. The plaintiffs are seeking the maximum amount of monetary relief allowed under the applicable state statutes.

Yes, square is also holding my funds. I just had a $1300 transaction and I don’t have it on auto transfer because the fees are too high but it’s been days and no deposit. Square and PayPal are the same. They need to be stopped

  2. Tommye Kaye Andre says:

My first transaction with Square was frozen. I submitted additional information as requested, but my account was deactivated and funds frozen for 99 days. The time has expired and funds have not been deposited to my linked account. There is no customer support or person to talk to. Square is literally stealing money from small businesses and nothing is being done about it.

My customer’s bookkeeper disputed 6 of his purchases from me. He AND I proved the charges were legit to Square, the bookkeeper was mistaken. However, this morning my bank account is wiped out by Square and there is MINUS -$1,365. “Funds could be held for 90 days pending outcome.”

Me too and I need to sue

I am in the same boat. The deactivate my account after I took a $1000 payment from a client that has paid the same way for years. I can’t get in touch with anyone. This is crazy that they will not return an email stating why you were deactivated plus steel your money! I think they need to be put out of business.

We filed a lawsuit against Square, Inc. in small claims court in AZ due to ongoing and unresolved suspended transfers. We’re awaiting our hearing date. It seems there are many small businesses being affected by Square’s rather unscrupulous business practices… With no support from Square directly and forced arbitration clause in their TOS, what is a small/micro business to do? This seems like a potentially rather large class action suit to me…

    1. Thomas says:

      Agreed. I’m in.

This same thing is happening to me. I don’t understand how Square has such credibility when you can’t speak with anyone. They disabled my account and wouldn’t release funds to me, there is absolutely no one you can get in touch with. I refunded my client the money over twenty days ago now, and she still hasn’t gotten the money back. Does anyone have any tips? This has been horrible!

  7. Kathy Edwards says:

Square suddenly stopped putting my deposits from sales into my bank account. We verified, nothing in our account has changed since we started utilizing them. We are a small business,, and need the $4000 they are holding to re-purchase our products, and to pay our monthly sales taxes. It is impossible to get a person on the phone. They are literally holding my new start-up small business hostage!

  8. Lezerick Fane says:

Square just basically took a 2500$ payment that I received and deactivated my account without telling me why. Gave them all sorts of personal information about me and my business. Please someone help. This has got to stop. They are doing this to small business owners.

    1. jessica says:

Have you gotten any further? I have been having the same situation with them and it has been over two months now. I have refunded my clients money to save me from the hassle but that hasn’t even gone through and it has been 20 days.

I was sent over 9 square cards! I didn’t ask for any of them. Then on my balance under “dash bound” I watched as $$$$ thousands would be taken out. It became a full time job trying to trying to stop and close cards! I would call and what for hours to have a representative pickup! They would say let me start a ticket and we will get back to you in 7 to 11 days!!! My anxiety and anger would go through the roof and I would wake up at one in the morning and watch the start all over again. Then they took money actually out of my Personal acct!! My square balance still says -$3,789. I put a stop on my acct. they owe me and I can’t seem to get my move because of them launching these damn cards and there being a click with my address on the cards. The same last four numbers of a phone # where used to activate these cards. So Square could have found that client or # or taken my address off the list! This started February 2021 and still is not fixed.
