Crypto fraud complaints overview:

  • Who: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau posted a complaint bulletin last week that revealed an increase in consumer complaints revolving around fraud and scams in cryptocurrency.
  • Why: Consumer complaints include fraud and scams in the crypto market that they say have led to frozen accounts, lost savings and transaction problems.
  • Where: The complaints are nationwide.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) revealed in a complaint bulletin last week that it received a growing number of consumer complaints concerning fraud and scams in the cryptocurrency industry.

The CFPB said crypto fraud and scam complaints have become a “significant problem” for crypto-asset markets.

“This issue appears to be getting worse, as fraud and scams make up more than half of ‘virtual currency’ complaints received thus far in 2022,” the CFPB says in its complaint bulletin.

“Our analysis of consumer complaints suggests that bad actors are leveraging crypto-assets to perpetrate fraud on the public,” CFPB Director Rohit Chopra says in a statement. “People should be wary of anyone seeking upfront payment in crypto-assets, since this may be a scam. We will continue our work to keep the payments system safe from fraudsters targeting Americans.”

Consumers reported several different types of cryptocurrency scams to the CFPB, including romance scams, scams where bad actors impersonate influencers or customer service reps and what is known as “pig butchering,” according to the agency.

Pig butchering is when “fraudsters pose as financial successes and spend time gaining the victim’s confidence and trust, coaching victims through setting up crypto-asset accounts.”

CFPB warns cryptocurrency assets a ‘common target’ for hackers

The CFPB warned that cryptocurrency assets are a “common target” for hackers who focus on older consumers and servicemembers in addition to general cryptocurrency investors.

In total, crypto fraud complaints from consumers “describe a wide range of account access and dispute resolution issues,” including “platform bankruptcies where their assets are indefinitely frozen, weeks-long waits due to account access problems, hours-long platform outages, difficulty executing transactions and poor customer service,” according to the CFPB.

In related crypto news, in September, cryptocurrency trading company Wintermute disclosed it was the victim of a security breach that compromised one of its trading wallets and led to around $160 million worth of digital assets being stolen.

Please add me, I was manipulated into online work, forced unknowingly onto developer platform and my material was openly distributed whilst using nord VPN, Norton 360, and McAfee. I was sold a pixel 6 that immediately synced every device in my home and my neighbors including my elderly disabled father. I was recorded and streamed and my ex utilized the material to purchase and capitalize on the stocks and keep my kids from me. I spent $50k on a custody case that was sabotaged and my children are being kept from seeing me by my abusive ex. I’m accused of nothing, charged with nothing. Medical records were leaked. Accounts all hacked while I was taking measures to protect all of it. I lost over $15k in wages and devices and still cannot gain access to my accounts. My information was leaked and sold and ultimately I had to claim identity theft. Hackers still access everything and I am recorded in my own home by various devices. My credit is shot, cards I never wanted became necessity and are maxed out. I have proof of everything. I’m being evicted and I need help. My health is bad and I’ve been kept from treatment including necessary meds. My apartment was entered illegally. I cannot access my Amazon account to obtain information to pursue lawsuits for products proven to have caused my cancer. Military insignia was disrespectfully stolen and broken down to code and offered back to me for purchase. Repositories exist for accounts and information that I desperately tried to regain control of for months. So many companies are at fault and I have reached out to many but my live chats are intercepted or fraudulently impersonated by these hackers. I can’t even access the svb money owed to me and I have reason to believe that my information is being used to collect funds owed to me. I cannot file my taxes because I am prevented from obtaining the necessary information and documents. My mail was compromised and scanned and my home was broken into to obtain my documents. Mold samples were stolen along with sim cards in attempts to collect the money for settlements. Everything in my life was compromised and abused to great extents and people tried to convince me that they were government workers investigating but I have no open cases anywhere. I’ve been kept from necessary SSI benefits and reinstating my license. I’ve been kept from completing tests ordered to further treatment for my crippling spinal skeletal defect and cancer treatments. My children are being kept from me and abused. Many felonies were committed. I need help.
