Human skeleton disease and osteoporosis of the hip bone concept with a puzzle texture and a missing piece as a medical and health care symbol of orthopedic and aging deterioration illness.A DePuy ASR hip recall was issued back in 2015, and patients have since been coming forward with lawsuits over serious complications linked with the device.

According to lawsuits, many of these complications have been serious enough to necessitate revision surgery. In some cases, lawsuits have resulted in patients being granted substantial settlement money. For some, a hip implant settlement can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The DePuy ASR Hip Replacement Device

Hip replacement surgery is one of the most common operations in the United States. At this point, thousands of Americans undergo hip replacement surgery each year. In total, more than half a million hip implantations have taken place in the country.

One of the more popular devices used in these surgeries was a metal-on-metal device from DePuy known as the DePuy ASR hip replacement. Unfortunately, metal-on-metal implants like the DePuy ASR device have been connected with certain serious complications. More and more patients with the DePuy ASR implant have begun coming forward with allegations of serious side effects.

So far, thousands of patients have filed lawsuits against DePuy over such injuries. Patients have claimed that their implants caused metallosis (a kind of metal poisoning), dislocation, and device dissociation. Patients have also reported a high rate of device failure, and claim that this is caused by a defectively manufactured device that places users at significant risk.

DePuy Hip Replacement Recall

The DePuy ASR hip implant device is manufactured by DePuy, a subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson. The device was released onto the market after approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2005.

After receiving a slew of complaints, however, the company issued a DePuy ASR hip recall of the device in August 2010. In total, the DePuy ASR hip recall affected around 93,000 implants distributed worldwide.

Patients who have undergone hip revision surgery due to a defective DePuy ASR hip implant since March 2015 may have a legal claim. Patients who may qualify to join a lawsuit include those who have experienced at least one of the following problems:

  • Device failure
  • Dislocated hip
  • Metallosis (toxic substance leaking into blood)
  • Cancer
  • Degenerative heart disease
  • Bone fractures
  • Death of surrounding tissue
  • Others

The FDA has received countless reports of these kinds of side effects.

Unfortunately, complications with hip implants are often serious enough to necessitate hip replacement revision surgery in order to remove the failed device and replace it with something else. Of course, revision surgery itself will expose patients to even more dangers, such as the risk of infection, as well as the increased medical expenses of an extra surgery.

Filing a DePuy Lawsuit

If you or someone you love has suffered complications from a metal-on-metal hip implant by DePuy, or has been forced to undergo hip replacement revision surgery, you may be able to file a hip implant lawsuit. Of course, filing a lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by device complications, but it can help to alleviate the financial burden from medical expenses and lost wages.
