A Washington man filed a new lawsuit against Howmedica, alleging that the company’s Stryker femoral heads are defective and caused serious injury.
The plaintiff, Robert H., was implanted with a Stryker Accolade hip device in his right hip in January 2008. These hip implants include Stryker femoral heads, which Robert alleges was defective and led to serious complications. The femoral head was explanted in December 2016 as a result of these side effects.
Robert was implanted with a second hip device in October 2012, which was explanted in June 2016 due to complications.
Both of these injuries were caused by defective Stryker femoral heads, Robert claims, leading him to file a lawsuit against the manufacturer.
According to Robert’s lawsuit, the defective Stryker femoral heads led to personal physical injury as well as economic loss.
Robert filed his Stryker femoral heads lawsuit on multiple counts, including negligence, defective design, failure to warn, breach of express and implied warranties, and consumer fraud, among several others. The lawsuit was filed on Jan. 2, 2018 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
Robert is not the first patient to file a lawsuit over injuries caused by allegedly defective Stryker femoral heads. Others before him have filed lawsuits alleging a number of serious complications, including hip implant failure and metallosis.
Side Effects from Defective Stryker Femoral Heads
Stryker femoral heads have been associated with a variety of serious complications. These are components of metal-on-metal hip implants, which may rub against each other and release excessive amounts of the metals cobalt and chromium into the bloodstream. This is a condition known as metallosis, which can cause serious and even permanent problems. Stryker femoral heads have also been linked with an increased risk of dissociation or dislocation.
More and more patients like Robert who claim to have been injured by defective Stryker femoral heads are coming forward to file lawsuits with their own allegations of side effects. Lawsuits allege that Stryker and its parent company, Howmedica, failed to adequately warn patients of the serious side effects associated with defective Stryker femoral heads.
The following side effects have been linked with defective Stryker femoral heads:
- Hip implant failure
- Serious physical pain
- Emotional and mental distress
- Medical and surgical expenses
- Loss of enjoyment of life
In many cases, patients suffering from these and other side effects are forced to undergo revision surgery to remove the device and relieve these problems. Of course, any additional surgery adds yet more risk of infection and other problems, as well as adds expense for a patient.
Filing a Stryker Hip Implant Lawsuit
If you or someone you love was implanted with a Stryker metal hip implant and have since suffered from these or other side effects due to defective Stryker femoral heads, you may be able to file a lawsuit.
Although filing a lawsuit cannot undo the damage done by complications caused by Stryker femoral heads, it can help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses and lost wages.
