W.R. Grace has funded the Zonolite Attic Insulation Trust to reimburse claimants for legitimate property damage claims associated with the removal, abatement, and/or containing the asbestos-contaminated vermiculite insulation.
Zonolite is the trademarked name of a naturally-occurring mineral vermiculite product mined in Libby, Montana, and was sold as attic insulation from the 1940s through the 1980s.
Popular within the construction industry because it was lightweight and fire-resistant, Zonolite insulation was installed in millions of homes throughout the United States. However, the vermiculite mined in Libby is known to contain a small amount of asbestos, which can be harmful if it is disturbed and particles are released into the air.
Grace, which operated the Zonolite company from 1963 to 1990, reached a settlement over the Zonolite asbestos insulation claims and funded an independent Zonolite trust and claims facility to allow claimants to seek partial reimbursement for the expenses associated with removal or containment of the Zonolite asbestos insulation.
Vermiculite is a natural, flaky mineral, according to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). When heated to a high temperature, the flakes expand, making vermiculite a light-weight, fire-resistant, odorless material.
Zonolite-branded vermiculite accounts for about 75 percent of the used in homes, according to the trust website. Consumers who have vermiculite are advised not to assume it is the Zonolite brand.Â
In addition to funding an independent trust that will operate for at least 20 years, Grace will also educate the public about potential health effects that are associated with asbestos-containing vermiculite.
The Zonolite insulation trust is only for abatement claims. Those who suffered injury from personal exposure to Zononlite asbestos insulation or any other Grace asbestos products can obtain information about a separate fund by contacting Mark T. Hurford at (302) 426-1900 x102 or mhurford@camlev.com.
Who’s Eligible
If Zonolite attic insulation was installed in a structure that you currently own or rent, or that you previously owned or rented, and you incurred expenses associated with the removal, abatement, reinsulation or containing the insulation, you are eligible to submit a claim for reimbursement.
The Trust applies to both residential and commercial buildings.
Potential Award

The Trust may provide up to 55 percent of the abatement cost for eligible claimants, up to a maximum of $4,125. The Trust does not provide compensation for diminution of property value or economic loss.
Proof of Purchase
Claimants must provide proof that they have Zonolite brand vermiculite insulation, such as Zonolite bags, a Zonolite receipt or invoice, or an independent lab test. You can also send in a sample to have it tested at no cost to you.
Claimants must also submit documentation, including before and after photos, a copy of the contractor proposal and invoice, and a copy of a canceled check, bank statement or credit card statement.
It is recommended that claimants submit all documented allowable expenses for vermiculite removal and reinsulation, even if the costs exceed the $7,500 maximum claim value.

Where do I send the sample for testing?
This class action is ridiculous. I recently got a quote to have my vermiculite tested and I was quoted $500 just for the test. Then I discover I don’t get the full amount it’ only a percentage of what I spend? Forget that. Not worth the hassle or the expense.
What if you worked with it and havent been diagnosed yet
What if vermiculite was used where you used to work in order to slowly cool welded parts this came in bags that said vermiculite insulation
Where do I send my insulation sample for tests?
