Zithromax Linked to Heart and Liver Problems

More and more Zithromax lawsuits have been filed, with allegations mounting that consumption of the drug can greatly increase the risk of heart attack and liver damage. It is alleged that despite having prior knowledge of these Zithromax side effects, Pfizer Inc., the maker of the drug, refused to inform the public about the risks. It was not until 2001 that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) required Pfizer to include a better warning label that explicitly lists abnormal liver functions as a potential side effect.

Overview of Zithromax Side Effects

Zithromax, or Z-Pak, is one of the most widely-used antibiotics on the market right now. Used to treat common illnesses like strep throat, ear infections and pneumonia, Zithromax has been the “go-to” choice for both physicians and patients. Zithromax enjoyed record sales of $453 million and $435 million in 2011 and 2012, respectively. However, there is growing concern about the safety of the popular antibiotic.

In May 2012, a 14-year study was conducted at Vanderbilt University to observe possible side effects of the use of antibiotics, including Zithromax. It was concluded that for every million courses of treatment with Zithromax, there were 85 deaths as a result of sudden cardiac arrest. Although the number might not shock many, it is concerning when the number is compared to the 30 deaths among a group of people that did not take any antibiotics.

After releasing an initial communication in 2012 and an update in March 2013, the FDA has warned that Zithromax “can cause abnormal changes in the electrical activity of the heart that may lead to a potentially fatal irregular hearth rhythm.”

Hepatotoxicity, or toxic liver disease, and hepatitis are all allegations raised in complaints against Zithromax. Patients having prior health concerns are most at risk. In most cases, death occurred in patients that developed hepatotoxicity or hepatitis.
