A Pennsylvania woman recently filed a lawsuit against Monsanto, alleging that exposure to the company’s product Roundup led directly to her diagnosis with mantle cell lymphoma.
The plaintiff, Denise M., claims that regular exposure to Monsanto’s weedkiller Roundup is responsible for her mantle cell lymphoma diagnosis. According to the lawsuit, Denise began using Roundup on a regular basis in the early 1970s on her parents’ property. She has continued regularly using Roundup as her go-to weedkiller product, all the way through 2016.
Unfortunately, Denise was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer in May 2016. She has undergone serious cancer treatment already, including a stem cell transplant. Besides the obvious physical side effects of this condition, Denise is also being drastically affected by the medical expenses involved.
It wasn’t until the beginning of 2017 that Denise first learned that the regular use of Roundup is actually linked with causing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and related illnesses. In response, Denise chose to file her mantle cell lymphoma against Monsanto. The lawsuit claims that Monsanto failed to adequately warn Denise and other consumers about the risks linked with Roundup usage.
The mantle cell lymphoma lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including design defect, failure to warn, negligence, breach of express and implied warranties and the use of unfair and deceptive trade practices. The lawsuit was filed on Nov. 6 in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
Many others like Denise also use Roundup in domestic or household capacities, and may not expect that they run the risk of such serious side effects as diagnosis with mantle cell lymphoma or other cancers.
This lawsuit and many others like it claim that Monsanto has actively misrepresented its product Roundup as safe, despite knowing about the connection between Roundup and a number of cancers, including mantle cell lymphoma.
In fact, Monsanto has used the taglines “safer than table salt” and “practically non-toxic” to animals to describe its product, when the actual risk is much greater. The New York Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Monsanto for making these kinds of statements, claiming they deceived customers about the actual safety of the product.
Background of Roundup and Cancer Risk
Monsanto’s popular weedkiller Roundup has been linked with a number of types of cancer, including mantle cell lymphoma, the type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) that Denise was diagnosed with. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began to suspect a connection between Roundup usage and cancer back in the 1980s. Now, a growing number of Roundup users are filing lawsuits against Monsanto with allegations of cancer from Roundup.
Cancers Linked with Roundup
Types of cancer that have so far been linked with Roundup use include the following:
- Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
- Leukemia
- Multiple Myeloma
- B-cell Lymphoma
- Bone Cancer
- Renal Cell Carcinoma (kidney cancer)
- Other Cancers
