Monsanto Company is facing a new Roundup cancer lawsuit, which was recently filed by a widow alleging her husband died of follicular lymphoma that had been caused by glyphosate exposure. The woman alleges that her husband’s regular exposure to glyphosate caused him to develop follicular lymphoma, which he reportedly died from.
Plaintiff Maryanne H. filed legal action on behalf of her deceased husband Marvin H., who she alleges developed follicular lymphoma as a direct result of regularly using Roundup weedkiller. Follicular lymphoma is a B-cell lymphoma type that is characterized by tumor cells that take over the structure of the lymph node.
Approximately 90 percent of follicular lymphoma patients have the CD20 protein on the surface of the cancer cells, which is targeted during treatments like chemotherapy. Like other cancers, follicular lymphoma can be potentially fatal if not treated quickly.
According to the Roundup lawsuit, this had also been the case with Marvin, who died of the disease on July 5, 2018. The claim states that Marvin had used Roundup regularly for typical purposes from the early 1970s through the 1980s, and again during the 1990s through 2015.
During these periods of time, Marvin allegedly used Roundup for personal consumer purposes such as lawn treatment and had followed all safety instructions and product information provided on the label. Even with this diligence, Marvin still developed the disease and was reportedly diagnosed with follicular lymphoma in March 2015.
Maryanne had opted to file legal action soon after discovering the alleged correlation between glyphosate and cancer.
Overview of Roundup Cancer Correlation
Roundup is one of the most widely used pesticides in the world, with the product used in commercial nurseries, golf courses, and suburban lawns. Glyphosate is the main ingredient of this weedkiller, which works by targeting plants with a specific enzyme and inhibits their reproduction.
While glyphosate works well in destroying unwanted plant life, it has been allegedly linked with different cancers like follicular lymphoma. The correlation between glyphosate and cancer was recently announced in a March 2015 report presented by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
The IARC stated glyphosate and four other pesticides have been linked to cancer, after reviewing the results of several studies from the United States, Canada, and Sweden:
- The Canadian study was published in November 2001 by the America Association for Cancer Research, which found that subjects exposed to glyphosate were likely to develop non Hodgkin’s lymphoma in under 10 years after exposure.
- The United States study was published in the Occupational and Environmental Medicine journal, which found that glyphosate and certain other pesticides were “potentially carcinogenic” and were “associated with increased NHL [non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma] incidence.”
- The Swedish study was published in October 2008 in the International Journal of Cancer, which found that the risk of non Hodgkin’s lymphoma doubled in less than 10 years after exposure.
The alleged correlation between glyphosate and cancer has been speculated since the 1980s, with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suspecting a link since the 1980s. Even though the risk of cancer can be devastating to patients, the Monsanto Company allegedly failed to warn the public.
The Follicular Lymphoma Lawsuit is Case No. 2:18-cv-02228-BSB, in the U.S. District Court of Arizona.
