Volkswagen Group of America issued a recall for nearly 80,000 of its model year 2021-2023 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles over concerns their rearview camera displays could fail to display an image or be delayed.

The recall involves Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles made between March 6, 2020, and Nov. 2, 2023, that are equipped with software versions created prior to the introduction of “certain bug fixes and robustness improvements.”

Volkswagen says it is concerned a defective rearview camera display could increase the risk of an accident or injury when the vehicle is in reverse, the recall notice states.

“If the rearview camera display is delayed or not displaying an image, there is an increased risk of crash or injury when the vehicle is backing up,” the Volkswagen ID.4 recall says.

VW to provide free software update to owners of recalled ID.4 vehicles

Volkswagen is providing a free software update and reimbursement to  owners of the recalled vehicles, according to the recall notice.

“The updated software will contain certain bug fixes and robustness improvements to prevent software resets and rearview camera/dashboard display issues,” the Volkswagen recall says.

The automaker says it plans to notify affected vehicle owners about the recall on July 12, 2024.

The National Highway Traffic Administration announced this month it is investigating a recall involving 51,000 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles initiated over concerns their doors could open while the vehicle is in motion
