A concerned pet owner recently filed a class action lawsuit against the maker of Taste of the Wild dog food claiming that the products are contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, and other harmful chemicals.

Plaintiff Martin Grossman is suing defendant Diamond Pet Foods Inc. over allegations that the company’s Taste of the Wild products are contaminated with harmful chemicals including pesticides.

Diamond Pet Foods manufactures and distributes Taste of the Wild products, marketing the dog food as formulated “based on your pet’s ancestral diet.”

The company further supports the quality of their products by stating: “Every ingredient is carefully selected from trusted sources, each recipe is designed by our veterinarians and nutritionists to meet specific nutritional requirements and every product is tested for quality and safety before leaving our facilities.”

Despite claims of natural ingredients and high quality nutrition, Taste of the Wild dog food may not be as incredible as marketing suggests. Grossman alleges that Diamond Pet Food products contain a series of undesirable contaminates which can cause harm to animals.

Through testing of Taste of the Wild, Grossman says he discovered the dog food contains heavy metals including arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium, as well as pesticides, acrylamide, and BPA.

These contaminates can allegedly build up in an animal’s body and cause toxicity, leading to adverse health conditions. Health conditions reported in relation to pet food contaminates include lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal damage, nerve damage, neurological side effects, seizures, heart problems, cancers, and in some cases death.

In his Diamond Pet Food class action, Grossman alleges that the manufacturer knew about the contaminates in their Taste of the Wild pet foods, but chose to mislead consumers in an attempt to increase their profits. The Taste of the Wild manufacturer allegedly acknowledges and aims to capitalize on the trend of pet owners prioritizing natural, nutritious ingredients in their pet food.

“Defendants know that certain consumers seek out and wish to purchase premium pet foods that possess high quality ingredients and do not contain chemicals or contaminants, and that these consumers will pay more for pet foods that they believe possess these qualities than for pet foods that they do not believe possess these qualities,” the Taste of the Wild dog food class action claims.

Grossman seeks to represent a Class of consumers who have purchased contaminated Taste of the Wild dog food since May 1, 2013. The Diamond Pet Food class action seeks restitution, disgorgement, statutory damages, punitive damages, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.

Plaintiffs are represented by Robert K. Shelquist and Rebecca A. Peterson of Lockridge Grindal Nauen PLLP; Joseph DePalma, Steven J. Greenfogel, and Susana Cruz-Hodge of Lite DePalma Greenberg LLC; Daniel E. Gustafson, Karla M. Gluek and Raina C. Borrelli of Gustafson Gluek PLLC; Kevin A. Seely and Steven M. McKany of Robbins Arroyo LLP; and Charles Laduca and Kathrine Van Dyck of Cuneo Gilbert & Laduca LLP.

The Taste of the Wild Contaminated Pet Food Class Action Lawsuit is Grossman v. Shell & Kampeter Inc. d/b/a Diamond Pet Foods, Case No. 2:18-cv-02344-JAM-AC, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California.

I love my dog like my child. He has been eating TOTW since 4 months old, He is now 12 years old. My dog has age like humans do. My dog started on grain free with veggies on the side; along with my extra bread I cut back on, which made up for the grains he lacked in his food. When I was told to switch from grain free to grain of TOTW my vet said to mix the two together equally because you CAN’T JUST SWITCH AN ANIMALS FOOD! they take time to adjust. Like a human has to adapt to a diet change. Personally, I’ve compare TOTW ingredients to another dog food which are exactly the same. As far as price and ingredients, Blue is far more expensive. So is the other brand I reviewed. Out of all the years I have had my dog the only product I have found to make him sick was milk bone brushers; because of a yellow dye. I certainly hope everyone on this lawsuit checked their dogs treats, their environmental factors and table foods they are feeding their animals. Allergies to the environment can cause issues as well. Dogs as well as cats get into things owners are unaware of. Bottom line; take responsibility of ones actions, owners decided to buy the food. Genetics are what they are, not all breeds are super breeds that can tolerate all foods or environmental interactions.

      Christina,
My Baby Zeus Loves TOTW without issues. Did your baby ever have problems?
      Thanks!

  3. Dee Russ says:

Please add me to this lawsuit. I just took my dog to the vet because of vomiting and diarrhea. She was diagnosed with liver problems.

  4. Chris says:

Please add me to the class action. My dog is a small breed and I tired switching her to Taste of the Wild aancient grains after giving her Taste of the Wild Bison and Venison for a few years. She is so sick now, vomiting and has diarrhea. I hope she pulls though. I don’t want to lose her!

    1. Sara says:

She’s fine. that happened because you switched formulas and it can take a couple of months of mixing the food to get her used to it. You can always go back to the other if it was fine for her with no issues. My dog can’t tolerate 2 of the ancient grains so I went back to normal grain free Prairie, all better.

    2. K says:

You do realize that happens when you switch a dogs food suddenly. Even when you slowly transition to the new food it happens.

  5. Araceli Boren says:

This is mind boggling! Both my dogs have lumps on their body. I have been feeding them Taste of the Wild believing it is good for them. I have contacted Chewy and stopped delivery for this food. I will no longer feed them Taste of the Wild.

    1. Janice says:

I also have two dogs that have developed lumps and one having a handful of stones removed from her bladder recently. I’m glad I read your message.

  6. Tyra Lundy says:

Please add me. I had no idea. I will find a new brand asap

  7. Patricia Perwak says:

TOTW was recommended to me because my dog had allergies. Now she has little cysts appearing on her and she is refusing to eat it. Today is the first I’ve heard this food is toxic. Please include me in this class action law suit!

    1. Olivia says:

Ok this is scary !! I switched too b/c of allergies !!! I was told not to feed him Blue. Errrrr!!! Ok at the store searching for something new.

  8. Amber Williams says:

I have lost 2 dogs in 24 months due to taste of the wild dog food. How do I file a claim ?

    1. K says:

How has the food caused you to lose your dogs? Do you have actual proof of this ?

  9. Alana Costello says:

Please add me to this suit

  10. Denise Bloomer says:

I don’t know if this lawsuit is still open but I have 6 dogs and all of them have dome sort of issues. Mostly cyst-like bumps on their bodies. One is being seen by the vet because she chewed one of them on her tail and the vet said it could be cancerous. I am very upset because we have fed the youngest TOTW since they were puppies and now at 7 they are showing all of these lumps and bumps. My daughter also has one of the puppies and she has no issues at all…she does not eat TOTW. I noticed a year and a half or so ago that they decreased the amount in a bag from 30 lbs. to 28 lbs., but the price stayed the same… Makes me wonder if there were 2 lbs. of Heavy metals, etc. in each bag. If this lawsuit is over, maybe we should start another one!!!!!
