- Why: The recall was initiated over concerns the vehicles may have been equipped with defective front passenger air bag sensors.
- Where: The recall affects certain Subaru vehicle owners nationwide.
Subaru has issued a new recall for nearly 120,000 model year 2020-2022 Outback and Legacy vehicles over concerns they may have been equipped with defective front passenger air bag sensors.
The recall involves 103,114 Subaru Outback SUVs and 15,609 Subaru Legacy four-door vehicles produced between June 16, 2020, and July 12, 2021.
Subaru said it is concerned a capacitor in the front passenger air bag sensors could crack and short circuit, preventing the front passenger air bag from deploying in the event of an accident.
“An air bag that does not deploy during a crash can increase the risk of injury,” a recall acknowledgment letter the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration sent to Subaru states.
Subaru recall: dealers to replace sensors on front passenger seats of recalled vehicles
Subaru will remedy the issue by having its dealers replace all four occupant detection sensors on the front passenger seats in the recalled vehicles and provide reimbursement to owners for repairs, according to the Legacy and Outback recall.
Subaru said it plans to notify affected vehicle owners with an interim owner notification letter May 21, 2024. A final owner notification letter will be sent once sufficient remedy parts are available.
Subaru previously agreed to a settlement resolving claims the automaker manufactured and sold model year 2019-2020 Subaru Ascent vehicles equipped with defective continuously variable transmissions.

5 thoughts onSubaru recall issued for Outback, Legacy vehicles due to air bag defect
My outback is subject to the recall and has an active SRS warning light, confirmed by the dealership. Have opened a case with Subaru corporate, but they closed it without contacting me due to still having ‘no remedy available’ 10 months after they started the recall. Didn’t even offer other types of compensation. I haven’t been able to use the passenger seat of my outback the last 4 months. Big problem since the significant other gets motion sickness in the back so we just can’t use the car for trips. Just reopened a case with Subaru to see if they’ll agree to give me a rental indefinitely until they can fix their issues.
Have contacted dealerships twice on RECALL…. no answer or call back. Keep receiving cards/letters in mail but no one seems to actually care
please add me
Yes I am concerned to drive this vehicle now
I have a Subaru so I am very concerned about this since this car was sold as one of the safest vehicles on the market.
