Update:

  • A judge dismissed a class action lawsuit over an alleged Samsung refrigerator defect in a New Jersey federal court late last month.
  • The plaintiffs claimed Samsung sold refrigerators with defective French-door external dispensers allegedly prone to leaking, slushing over, freezing and excessive noise.
  • The class action, first filed in 2017, had previously been in mediation for more than a year following a judge’s order in 2019 and prior to a scheduled court hearing in May 2021.

(April 27, 2021)

After being in mediation for more than a year, the class action lawsuit claiming Samsung refrigerators suffer from an ice tray defect continues to be negotiated.

In their 2017 class action lawsuit, lead plaintiffs Ronald and Debra Bianchi claimed that a defect in Samsung refrigerators with French door external dispensers causes a number of problems, including leaks, slush, over freezing, and excessive fan noise.

In 2019, U.S. District Court Judge Claire C. Cecchi ordered the parties to mediation in a bid to help them resolve the claims in the Samsung refrigerator class action lawsuit. Though the parties are still mediating, a court hearing has been scheduled for May 4, 2021, and Samsung has submitted a response to the complaint.

Top Class Actions reached out to class counsel who confirmed that the parties are still mediating.

The nationwide class action lawsuit and alleged Samsung refrigerator defects potentially affect thousands of consumers. Top Class Actions will continue to monitor developments in the litigation.

The Bianchis alleged in their Samsung ice maker class action lawsuit that thousands of consumers have been subject to leaky refrigerators. The units at issue include residential refrigerators with a French door external dispenser built-in.

The allegedly affected models are: RF23HCEDB, RF23HCEDT, RFH23HSESB, RF23HTEDB, RF23J9011, RF24FSEDB, RF25HMEDB, RF263BEAE, RF263TEAE, RF26J7500, RF28HDEDB, RF28HDEDT, RF28HFEDB, RF28HFEDT, RF28HFPDB, RF30HDEDT, RF31FMEDB, RF31FMESB, RF323TEDB, RF32FMQDB, RF34H9950 and RF34H9960 in all colors.

The plaintiffs claimed that the defective ice makers lead to not only leaks out of the fridge, but inside as well. In addition, consumers complain that the ice bucket becomes stuck, possibly due to a clogged drain from the defect.

The class action lawsuit claims that the manufacturer has refused to address the alleged defect. Indeed, Samsung has fought the allegations, filing a motion to dismiss the class action prior to mediation in 2019 and again denying the allegations in court documents filed in February of this year.

I have the same problems with my refrigerator as some of the complaints but my model starts with a P and not a F. It’s a GE Profile. The mother board had to be replaced. Ice maker was leaking. Ice kept piling up Back of frig was getting frozen. Water dispenser was frozen not dispersing water. Moisture Fan was getting stuck in ice making loud noise. Was told by last repairman that the part was discontinued because of problems and that there was a class action against Samsung which manufactured my GE Profile

We purchased a Samsung RF34H9960S4/AA Fridge for our new custom home built in 2010. Shortly after installation, the fridge began to have issues with the ice maker. We have had repeated repair service with no real solution to the slushy ice, water dripping into the door tray and now the door has filled with water and leaks onto the floor and has corroded the entire door! Due to the repeated multiple repairs, we paid for years of appliance warranty coverage in excess of $5,000, which we recently opted to discontinue since the ice maker and door issue appears to be unfixable. We carefully selected this fridge due to the size and options but it has become a constant problem with the ice maker issue and a freezer that often fails to keep food at ‘frozen’ temperatures, which required us to purchase a new freezer for the garage to prevent food from going bad. This fridge costs as much as some families spend on their entire kitchen appliances! It is frustrating that we have been dealing with this disaster since installation.

My refrigerator started having problems the first year we had it. It started with not cooling enough and I thought it was just the temp controller. Later I noticed the ice maker started to leak water from the front . Then the ice maker started to get stuck and the ice maker stopped making ice cause of the build up . We had it serviced and a technician came out and replaced the ice maker unit. Six months later I noticed things started to spoil to soon like milk, food ,and some dairy products. Then the ice maker was getting all frozen again and the door would close right. Then the whole thing stoped cooling totally. I’ve been going back and forth with Samsung and they send out a technician and he said it was the compressor.. On the fridge itself it says 10 year warranty on compressor. Samsung says it’s digital converter compressor and that warranty has expired.
I’m done with Samsung. Very disappointed in there service and product

  4. William Eason says:

We have the same problem with leaks around the ice maker. We took out the ice container, because the leaks were freezing
It in place. The refrigerator came with the purchase of the home and was new. A technician came to repair, said a part had
to be ordered, it never came back. Talked several times with Customer Service, but received no help

  5. Cynthia Johnson says:

We bought a Samsung refrigerator model RF27T5201SG/AA and the ice maker stopped working after about 1 month. We contacted Samsung and they refused to work on it. We’ve uses our home warranty company to repair the ice maker 6 times now. Twice the mother board has been replaced and it still freezes over causing the ice machine not to work. We would ima to be part of the lawsuit and receive a full refund for the lemon of a refrigerator. We will never by anything Samsung other than a TV or cell phone.
