In a new Roundup lawsuit, a man says glyphosate dangers resulted in his development of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Plaintiff Philip C. allegedly developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using Roundup products for years to control weeds. Roundup has been commercially available for 40 years.
Glyphosate is Roundup’s active ingredient and is a broad-spectrum herbicide that is considered “non-selective.” As a result, glyphosate kills any organism that produces a particular enzyme known as EPSP synthase. When glyphosate interferes with the enzyme’s work of eliminating acid within the plant, the plant dies.
According to the glyphosate dangers complaint, nearly 250 million pounds of glyphosate are sprayed on plants every year. Commercial nurseries, crops, consumer lawns, parks and golf courses all use Roundup products.
Monsanto, Roundup’s manufacturer, also was involved in the creation of genetically modified (GMO) crops that are often advertised as “Roundup Ready.” These seeds are genetically changed to withstand the effects of being sprayed with glyphosate. This means they can absorb Roundup and not suffer the effects of dying even though the weeds right next to them will wither and die. In 2010, almost 70 percent of corn and cotton and 90 percent of soybean fields in the U.S. used Roundup Ready seeds.
Glyphosate Dangers Allegedly Hidden
According to plaintiffs in the Roundup litigation, Monsanto allegedly has been aware of the potential carcinogenic properties of glyphosate since the 1980s. Even more alarming, the glyphosate dangers lawsuit alleges that glyphosate mixtures such as Roundup are more toxic than any one ingredient alone.
Researcher Julie Marc published a study in 2002 that indicated Roundup caused delays in cell cycles within sea urchins. When the same amount of glyphosate alone was given, the results indicated no interruption in cell cycles. A marked change in cell cycle regulation is a defining moment of tumor cell development in the creation of human cancers.
Nora Benachour and Gilles-Eric Seralini published a study in 2009 regarding the effects of Roundup and glyphosate on human placental, embryonic and umbilical cells. They reportedly used diluted levels of Roundup and glyphosate that were below agricultural recommendations and instead, corresponded with the low levels of residues in food products.
“The study concluded that supposed ‘inert’ ingredients, and possibly POEA, change human cell permeability and amplify toxicity of glyphosate alone,” says the glyphosate dangers lawsuit. POEA stands for polyethoxylated tallow amine, a surfactant used in Roundup. Glyphosate dangers allegedly appear to become more pronounced when mixed with POEA.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is a component of the World Health Organization. The IARC conducted tests in 2015 and “found an increased risk between exposure to glyphosate and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) and several subtypes of NHL, and the increased risk continued after adjustment for other pesticides.”
According to the glyphosate dangers lawsuit, the IARC detected damage to human DNA and chromosomes allegedly caused by glyphosate.
In addition, tests allegedly show that glyphosate dangers include oxidative stress, which in combination with chronic inflammation, is believed to be a catalyst of human cancer.
The Glyphosate Dangers Lawsuit is Case No. 4:18-cv-00861-NAB, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
