Customers in California and Washington who purchased Rodan and Fields’ lash boosting serum, Lash Boost, may be eligible for a free investigation.
A new investigation has been started into Rodan and Fields Lash Boost looking into allegations that the lash boosting serum contains isopropyl cloprostenate, a drug regulated by the FDA. Consumer advocates suspect Rodan and Fields may be in violation of federal law by selling a product that is technically a drug without first having it approved by the FDA.
Rodan and Fields is a luxury skin care brand which sells skin care products developed by dermatologists. Rodan and Fields’ Lash Boost is a lash boosting serum marketed to improve the appearance of eyelashes in as little as four weeks. The product is supposed to be swiped on the lash line before bed and not washed off.
Lash Boost contains several natural ingredients commonly found in hair products, including water, keratin, biotin, almond extract, and pumpkin seed extract. The lash boosting serum also contains isopropyl cloprostenate, a drug ingredient regulated by the FDA.
Isopropyl cloprostenate is an active drug ingredient used in medications that treat glaucoma. The drug treats glaucoma by lowering the pressure in the eye. Although this makes it an effective treatment for individuals with glaucoma, a disease involving high intraocular pressure, the effects could be dangerous for someone with normal eye pressure, especially if use is not supervised by a doctor.
Adverse effects of topical isopropyl cloprostenate include dry eye, eye irritation, eye inflammation, eye redness, iris color change, macular edema, low intraocular pressure, and other side effects.
By including isopropyl cloprostenate in their lash boosting serum, Rodan and Fields may be in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. By using the isopropyl cloprostenate and making certain claims about the product, their lash boosting serum may qualify as a “drug” instead of a cosmetic product.
If Lash Boost is a drug, it should have been evaluated as safe by the FDA. By selling the lash boosting serum without disclosing it as a drug and without listing possible side effects, the product may also be deceptively marketed and sold.
Despite similar products being classified as a drug, Rodan and Field continues to tell customers that the lash boosting serum is not a drug and is not associated with any significant side effects. Other companies, such as Lifetech Resources LLC, have allegedly received warning letters from the FDA for violating the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. They allegedly violated FDA guidelines by including isopropyl cloprostenate as a cosmetic additive in their products (RapidLash, NeuLash, and NeuveauBrow).
Concern over the legality and safety of Lash Boost has prompted a class action lawsuit investigation into claims that Rodan and Fields’ marketing materials contain misleading representations regarding the safety and classifications of the product.
If you or a loved one purchased Rodan and Fields’ lash boosting serum, Lash Boost, within the past 4 years and would not have purchased the product if you had known it contained unapproved drug ingredients, you may qualify for a free class action lawsuit investigation. You may qualify for the free class action investigation regardless of whether you developed side effects or not.
